After World War II, due to a longstanding prior agreement among the victorious Allies, displaced citizens of the various countries were returned to their homeland of origin whether or not they wanted to be. There were almost no exceptions to this rule. As a result, several million anti-communist citizens of Eastern Bloc nations were handed over to the not-so tender mercies of their native countries, now under communist rule. Only one nation in all of Europe failed to honor this agreement: the tiny Duchy of Luxembourg. The story of this film is based on a true incident, and the furor it caused. In 1945, the Russian general (Malcom McDowell) of a small detachment of five hundred Eastern Bloc soldiers who fought on the Axis (German) side, led them into the (neutral) Duchy, which had an announced policy of granting asylum. These refugees were swifly assimilated into the everyday life of the country and, despite enormous pressure from the great military powers of the day (particularly Russia), Luxembourg refused to relinquish them to almost certain death. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Except for the millionaire film producer, who undoubtedly only gets what he deserves, in this bedroom comedy almost everyone else on a luxury cruise liner headed for Mykonos seems to be having a good time with someone new. Doria (Jeanne Moreau) is a famed but aging opera singer whose career is necessarily drawing to a close: she is the top-billed entertainer for the voyage. Olga (Désirée Nosbusch) is the film producer's latest nubile discovery, Eric (Daniel Mesguich) is a journalist with a way with words and a weird new wife, and Andreas (Anthony Delon) is a handsome young man who is "available." He's quite available, actually, since he's a gigolo, but he finds himself quite passionate about his newest client. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This "policier" was co-written by producer and star Alain Delon with director Jose Pinheiro. It tells the story of a group of right-wing cops have begun carrying out vigilante justice on drug dealers and other crime figures who might otherwise avoid punishment for their misdeeds. Police inspector Grindel (Delon) understands the feelings which motivate these deeds, but does not approve. However, he is not highly motivated to put an end to the group's activities until it begins to appear that they are now attacking fellow cops for reasons which are unclear. Grindel sets to work to uncover the culprits, and in a climactic scene, confronts his colleague Scatti (Michel Serrault). Delon, a familiar figure in French cinema, has a great many films to his credit not only as an actor, but as a producer, director and screenwriter. This film marks his return to the screen as an actor after a three year absence. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The sentiments of producer, co-writer, and star Alain Delon provide the particular slant in this routine thriller about vigilante justice over other vigilantes. The angry hero (Delon) leaves France in a fury because of a technicality in the justice system that failed to convict the murderers of his wife. After lazing away his days in a Congolese village, sleeping with whatever woman he chooses or playing cards, he finds out that vigilantes have murdered his daughter because they are intent on ridding France of undesirables -- which include delinquents (a category mistakenly attributed to her) and North Africans, as well as drug dealers. Now really out of control, revenge propels the bereaved father to return home and murder the vigilantes one by one, maiming them first to watch them suffer. Justice, of course, is too blind to catch up with him. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
