Like Last Chants for a Slow Dance, Jon Jost's Sure Fire features Tom Blair in a dark, tragic character study. Blair plays Wes, a small-time real estate tycoon with big plans to lure urban Californians to his rural Utah town with the promise of cheap vacation homes. Wes applies his scheming business sense to every part of his life, from deciding on a gift for his wife to paying off his friend Larry's (Robert Ernst) debts to keep him under his thumb. Director of the first Police Academy movie, Hugh Wilson is also responsible for the action comedy-caper Burglar. Bernice Rhodenbarr (Whoopi Goldberg) is a retired cat burglar who works at a bookstore. Bad cop Ray Kirschman (G.W. Bailey) blackmails her, so she agrees to do a job for Dr. Cynthia Sheldrake (Lesley Ann Warren) in order to get the money. While she is doing the robbery, she accidentally stumbles onto the scene of a murder. Since she is the prime suspect, Bernice is forced into many chase scenes as she plays detective to find out who the real murderer is in order to clear her name. She is aided by her only two friends: the hapless dog groomer Carl Hefler (Bob Goldthwait) and the drunken floozy Frankie (Elizabeth Ruscio). Nine Las Vegas showgirls are chosen to go fight terrorists in the Middle East (by distracting them?) in this under-par action drama with some nudity and sexual encounters. The son of a diplomat has been kidnapped by Arabs -- as usual cast in the role of villains -- who want to get their hands on the secrets for constructing a special nuclear weapon. The Clowns are the hottest new rock band on the scene, with a wild stage show that features simulated acts of violence and dismemberment. Outfitted identically in theatrical makeup and skin-tight outfits, not even their biggest fans know what they really look like or which one is which. One night after a Clowns performance, a drug dealer is found stabbed to death in the alley outside the theater, and the police believe that one of the group's crazed fans took their bloody stage antics a little too seriously. When a private party for the band results in a pile of mutilated groupies, the suspicion falls directly on the Clowns and their road crew. Could the killer be the hotheaded roadie, or maybe the pill-addict drummer? The introverted stagehand who secretly puts the band's makeup on to meet girls? The levelheaded manager who left behind a life of religious dogmatism for the rock & roll world?
