Husband and wife producers Richard Goodwin and Christine Edzard return to the same milieu as in their epic version of Little Dorrit in The Fool. This slight story stars Derek Jacobi as Mr. Frederick, a theatrical clerk in the London of 1857, who concocts a monetary scam to bilk the rich. In order to carry off this deception, Mr. Frederick passes himself off as the well-heeled Sir John. But problems arise after he is recognized by some theater people, and he begins to take his false identity a bit too seriously. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

This made-for-TV adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden stars Gennie James as spoiled-rotten Mary Lennox. When her parents die of cholera, Mary is whisked from her home in India to live in the forbidding Victorian mansion of her flint-hearted uncle (Derek Jacobi). Thanks to the friendship--and vivid imagination--of gardener's son Jadrien Steele, Mary learns that life is lived best when one cares for others. At the same time, her uncle begins to act like a human being. The only false note in this otherwise flawless production was the decision to clumsily frame the story with the narration of the adult Mary Lennox. Blessed with a top-rank British cast, including Michael Hordern, Billie Whitelaw, Lucy Gutteridge and Alison Doody (Harrison Ford's vis-a-vis in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, this 1987 Secret Garden was first telecast as a Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The romantic drama Maschenka is a loose adaptation of a novel by Vladimir Nabokov done in a style reminiscent of a Merchant-Ivory production. Ganin (Cary Elwes) is a Russian refugee fleeing the 1917 Revolution who, at his Berlin boardinghouse, recalls his love for the beautiful Maschenka (Irina Brook). He soon leans what has become of her: she has married Alfyrov, a boarder at the same Berlin residence Ganin is staying at, and she is on her way to rejoin her husband. This knowledge, and the incessant recitation of his memories of old Russia by another boarder (Freddie Jones) send him into a state of reverie. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

In this 1986 made-for-television sequel to the 1971 film that won George C. Scott his only Academy Award, the acclaimed actor once again portrays General George S. Patton. While the original film dealt exclusively with the legendary military man's life during World War II, this follow-up picks up shortly after that war. After being seriously injured in an automobile accident, Patton lies in a hospital bed at death's door. As a team of doctor's struggle to save the General's life, he flashes back to the early years of his life, recounting his time spent fighting in the first World War. The Last Days of Patton also stars Kathryn Leigh Scott and Daniel Benzali. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Paul Mayersberg wrote and directed this sleek thriller about a bored rich girl, abducted by kidnappers, who begins to love her abductors. Beautiful Rowena Le Vay (Irina Brook) is the pampered daughter of a rich international tycoon, Gregory Le Vay (Oliver Reed), who, heartbroken at the death of his wife, tries to re-create her through Rowena. Rowena drinks and mopes around her mansion all day, unaware that she is being observed by a trio of abductors -- a stylish Frenchman who calls himself D (Xavier Deluc); a charming young Japanese man named Hiro (Hiro Arai); and an attractive radical-chic garbed woman named Bryony (Corinne Dacla). Rowena is imprisoned by the three in a cavernous garage where she is drugged, handcuffed, blindfolded and gagged. After that, so as not to clash with the decor, she is housed in a white box for the night. It becomes apparent that the kidnappers have carried out their crime, not for ransom or captive sexual favors, but simply for the joy of committing the crime. Not only that, but they seek to mold Rowena (who is already half way there) to their lifestyle. Rowena willingly assents. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

This is a standard sci-fi horror-thriller that mixes romance together with lumpy underground mutants and a pivotal mad scientist doing dirty deals with a gangland boss. The boss's former fair maiden ("maiden" only in the vaguest of definitions), happens to have been kidnapped from a brothel and is held hostage by the underground lumpies. It seems the unbalanced Dr. Savary (the late Denholm Elliott) has concocted a potion that will make dreams come true -- and leave ugly physical distortions in the process. When a former hitman is hired to save the kidnappee before the boss goon blasts away the mutant-dreamers, the end results are not what the drug lord expects. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Denholm Elliott, Steven Berkoff, (more)
Alan (John Gordon-Sinclair), a young British photographer, would like to break off his relationship with live-in girlfriend Mary (Irina Brook). Even as this little domestic drama is played out, Alan's assistant, Ken (David McKay), would like to launch a relationship with the young woman. Trouble is, he has no idea who or where the girl is -- he knows her only by her photograph. The various amorous intrigues are eventually resolved, but the results are surprising for both the characters onscreen and the viewers in the audience. Otherwise, the plot revels in its own predictability. Leading lady Irina Brook is the daughter of famed British theatrical director Peter Brook. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
