Handsome young Washington attorney Louie Jeffries (Chris McDonald) has it all: a promising career, a beautiful wife, and a baby on the way. But after discovering a local judge is in cahoots with the Mob, Louie bites it in a car crash and finds himself in Heaven. Unsatisfied with the customer service he's receiving, Louie jumps the gun and gets himself reincarnated -- before being administered the magic injection that will remove his memories of his former life. For the next quarter-century, Louie's museum curator wife, Corinne (Cybill Shepherd), remains true to her husband's memory, ignoring the frustrated devotion of Louie's best friend, Philip Train (Ryan O'Neal). Meanwhile, Louie's soul grows up in the body of Alex Finch (Robert Downey Jr.), an aspiring journalist. Alex's memories of his life as Louie return after he becomes romantically involved with Miranda (Mary Stuart Masterson) -- the daughter he never got to meet. Soon, Alex/Louie is romancing his wife, spurning his daughter's advances, and frustrating Philip's attempts finally to woo Corinne. Written by Mystic Pizza scribes Perry and Randy Howze and directed by Emile Ardolino of Dirty Dancing fame, Chances Are didn't score as well at the box office as those earlier comedies. Its soundtrack, however, generated the hit Peter Cetera and Cher ballad "After All." ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

A young woman is drawn into a strange confidence game after fate leaves her high and dry in this drama from filmmaker Alicia Scherson. Bianca (Manuela Martelli), who is in her late teens, and her younger brother Tomas (Luigi Ciardo), are devastated by the unexpected death of their parents, and are uncertain how they'll hold on to the apartment that has been their family home. Bianca takes a job with a hair stylist, and Tomas becomes a gofer at a fitness center. Neither job seems promising until Tomas strikes up a friendship with a pair of bodybuilders (Nicolas Vaporidis and Alessandro Giallocosta) who invite themselves into the family home. The bodybuilders are far better at looking after things than the siblings, and they also seduce Bianca while offering Tomas plenty of advice on the opposite sex. Before long, Bianca and Tomas discover the bodybuilders have an ulterior motive for being so helpful -- they've hatched a scheme to swindle a former movie star, Mr. Bruno (Rutger Hauer), who has gone blind and rarely leaves his mansion. The bodybuilders wants Bianca to sleep with Bruno in order to gain his trust and find out how to get their hands on his money, but after spending time with Bruno, she finds herself too intrigued by the damaged but charismatic actor to cheat him. Il Futuro (aka The Future) was an official selection at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This Argentine film freshens up an old cinematic device: juxtaposing science fiction and religion. A Buenos Aires mental hospital is thrown into an uproar when a mysterious male patient appears out of nowhere. As the psychiatrists grill the stranger, he sticks to a story that suggests that his origins are far from earthly. In fact, if his seemingly supernatural powers are any proof, he may well be a space alien. Unable to comprehend the incomprehensible, the authorities decide to lock the visitor away from public view, maybe even put an end to his life--and the analogies to Christ and Christianity are lost on no one. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Weighed down by her late husband's debts, widow Beth Macauley (Jessica Lange) is compelled to sell her home and move to a less costly locale. She relocates in Baltimore with her resentful sons Chris (Chris O'Donnell) and Matt (Charlie Korsmo) and takes a job at a ramshackle gourmet food store managed by Lisa Coleman (Kathy Bates). Men Don't Leave offers in Beth an extremely vulnerable, easily discouraged person who can't seem to get a grip on her reduced circumstances. Even so, she and her sons eventually pull themselves together, despite many side trips with Wrong Lovers and False Friends. Some of the film's best moments involve Joan Cusack, playing a mixed-up nurse with whom Chris falls in love. Representing the comeback of director Paul Brickman after a seven-year gap, Men Don't Leave is a slightly more upbeat American version of the French film La Vie Continue. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

As Chilean writer-director Alicia Scherson's debut feature, the psychodrama Play explores the ramifications of an infatuation that threatens to erupt into full-blown obsession. It unfolds in Santiago, Chile, where Cristina (Viviana Herrera), a young Mapuche who hails from the country's southern regions, works as a caregiver for a Hungarian émigré. After Tristan (Andres Ulloa), a well-to-do architect recently abandoned by his wife Irene (Aline Küppenheim), is accosted and robbed near the Hungarian's residence, Cristina happens to find his briefcase the following morning (in a metal bin) and eagerly tears it open, sifting through its contents. Though relatively banal, the ingredients - an iPod, identification cards, a notebook, the wife's vest - fascinate Cristina, who becomes fixated on probing and prying into Tristan's life. She first breaks into the couple's home, then tracks Tristan all over Santiago. Finally, Cristina's obsession reaches a new level when she swipes Irene's clothes and makeup and wears them herself, then ignites a torrid affair with the couple's gardener, Manuel (Juan Pablo Quezada). ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A woman unwittingly chooses to upend her marriage during a wilderness vacation in this comedy-drama from Chilean director Alicia Scherson. Carla (Aline Kuppenheim) is a scientist in her mid-thirties who isn't happy in her marriage to Joel (Marcelo Alonso), but she lacks the nerve to do anything about it. Rather than simply breaking up with him, Carla decides to force the issue during a camping trip by confessing to Joel that she's recently had an abortion but decided not to ask him first. Joel responds by abandoning Carla in the woods, and she finds herself hitching a ride back to town when he meets Ulrik (Diego Noguera), a student from Norway in his early twenties. Ulrik offers to share his campsite with Carla as she figure out her next move, and the two begin to bond, discovering they both find themselves lost and out of sorts at different points in their life and aren't sure they belong in the natural world. Turistas (aka Tourists) received its United States premiere at the 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
