This fantasy-adventure is geared to the younger set. The saga begins when an American military plane is forced to explode an atomic bomb in the ocean, which brings up an ancient sea monster from his deep hibernation. When poor Capt. Barrios (Timothy Bottoms) is taking the watch on his ship, the monster surfaces and scuttles the vessel. A fellow sailor, mad as a hornet, accuses the Captain of being drunk and Barrios is stripped of his rank and threatened with a criminal trial. Anxious to prove he was right about the sea monster, the much-maligned Capt. A young woman is abandoned by her lover after she tells him she is pregnant. Deeply depressed and longing for home, she boards a train out of town. Unfortunately a terrible train wreck ensues. She survives and ends up taking on the identity of one of the dead passengers. Now comfortable and secure that her child will have some claim to legitimacy, the woman is happy. Unfortunately, her dead-beat lover shows up and promises to make trouble if she doesn't pay up. The melodramatic plot is based on a story by Cornell Woolrich and was made twice before as No Man of Her Own (1932 and 1949 respectively). Fush (Claude Brasseur) and Ballestrat (Claude Rich) are the rival police detectives who head different departments trying to capture a notorious gangster in this crime thriller. Both are not above using underhanded and illegal means to attain their goals. Marie (Marlene Jobert) a the female cop in Ballestrat's department who adds to the tension by having an affair with Fush. After a plowboy accidentally unearths the skeletal remains of a demonic creature, a cult of teenage devil-worshippers emerges in a 17th-century Cornwall farming community, led by the gorgeous temptress Angel (Linda Hayden, who positively smolders). Together, the children begin performing blood sacrifices in order to bring the skeletal demon back to life. The film eventually steers into witch-hunt territory -- in the vein of Michael Reeves' Witchfinder General -- as the superstitious locals use inquisition-style practices to put a stop to Hayden's cult. This lush, moody horror piece is superbly written, though the plot becomes a bit dense at times; the film was originally intended as a three-part series, but was eventually edited down to one feature. Still, Piers Haggard's assured direction keeps the threads together and provides just enough shock value to keep viewers on their toes. Elizabeth Gracen makes her first series appearance as Amanda, the troublesome Immortal ex-girlfriend of Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul). A circus performer who moonlights as a cat burglar, Amanda has run afoul of her partner in crime, Zachary Blaine (Jason Isaacs), who intends to remove both her head and Duncan's.
