Australian actress Aileen Britton began her film career in 1937 playing in Tall Timbers. She then worked on stage until the reemergence of Australian cinema in the mid-1970s. Teenager Ellie (Tushka Bergen) is the only child of the widowed physician Neil McAdam (John Hargreaves) in this finely crafted drama, and the two spend their summers at the family cottage on the Australian coast. Ellie is bored and lonely until Margot Ryan (Heather Mitchell) comes to visit her parents who live next door. Ellie develops a close friendship with the 25-year-old woman and soon looks up to Margot, but she feels left out when her father and Margot fall in love. The title of the 1986 Australian miniseries Cyclone Tracy refers to an infamous hurricane that hit and nearly destroyed the northern Australian city of Darwin between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, 1974, killing well over 100 and leaving over 20,000 homeless. Both actress Judy Davis and director Gillian Armstrong made a big splash on the international scene with this charming Australian film that examines late 19th century Australian society from the perspective of a headstrong woman who refuses to follow convention. The film charts the developing self-awareness of Sybylla Melvyn (Judy Davis) as she grows from an insecure tomboy to a self-assured woman. Sybylla wants to be a writer and stuns her family and friends by her insistence on following her dream. Two children ride the same pony in this Disney film, but neither one is happy about sharing the animal they both love. James Ellison is rich and wears leg braces; on the pony, she is not crippled. Scotty Pirie is a poor farm boy, and he loves to ride the pony as well. The two dispute the ownership of the pony, and the townspeople create many complications through their support of one or the other. The title might suggest a Richard Arlen/Chester Morris "B" picture of the 1940s. In truth, Tall Timbers was filmed in Australia--New South Wales, to be exact. Two timber companies are engaged in a fierce rivalry over territory and output. The individual woodcutters are likewise at loggerheads (ouch) over money and women. Tall Timbers was directed by Ken G. Hall, one of the few interesting figures to emerge from the off-and-on Australian film industry of the 1930s (see notes on The Silence of Dean Maitland [34]). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
