In this historical drama produced for television, Richard Sharpe (Sean Bean) is an officer in the British Army who has his own way of doing things, but has risen to a rank of power thanks to his bravery and steely intelligence under fire. Sharpe is a Captain of the Battalion of South Essex, a platoon of inexperienced soldiers Sharpe is trying to mold into an efficient fighting force. Much to Sharpe's annoyance, South Essex looses an important battle thanks to the incompetence of Sir Henry Simmerson (Michael Cochrane), and their regimental flag and standard is stolen from them by French forces. The same battle took the life of one of Sharpe's closest friends, so now he's determined to get his revenge by taking from the French their prized standard, a golden eagle. Sharpe's Eagle also features Assumpta Serna as Teresa, a feared Spanish terrorist who is also Sharpe's lover, and Katia Caballero as Josephina, a widow of Sharpe's acquaintance. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
An amusingly cynical glimpse at British civil politics, the four-part miniseries Little Napoleons starred Norman Beaton and Saeed Jaffrey as immigrant South London notaries N.K. Edwards and Vijay Shah. Fighting tooth and nail over a town council post in multiracial North London, the two protagonists learn a lot more than they probably cared to know about how the political system really works. Not that either Edwards or Shah were babes in the woods; indeed, their own political shenanigans would at times have shamed the Borgias. Little Napoleons was telecast over Britain's Channel 4 in 1993. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Virtually all the episodes were filmed on location in Crimea and Portugal. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Adapted from the novel by Phyllis Shand Allfrey, the four-part British minseries Orchid House was set in the Dominican Republic between the two World Wars. The emphasis was on three middle-class English sisters -- Joan (Frances Baarber), Natalie (Elizabeth Hurley), and Stella (Kate Buffery) -- who lived in the same house with their ailing father. The novel is partly autobiographical, as Allfrey was herself born on the island of Dominica in 1908 and later founded the Dominican Labour Party. The story detailed the three sisters' growing awareness that, given the rapidly changing state of the world, they could no longer live out their lives like sheltered hothouse orchids -- especially after the loss of their family's savings. Orchid House was broadcast on Britain's Channel 4 in 1991. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

At the same time, Elaine finds herself attracted to the eldest heir, Mike (David Yip), and eventually Elaine and Mike enter into a romantic liaison. Created by Farrukh Dhondy, the multicultural British sitcom Tandoori Nights could just as easily have been retitled "Curry Wars." Saeed Jaffrey was cast as Jimmy Sharma, owner of London's Jewel in the Crown Tandoori Restaurant. Jealous of his lofty status as a caterer to the elite, Jimmy waged an ongoing battle of words and deeds with his hated rival, the owner of the Far Pavillions Restaurant. Broadcast over Britain's Channel 4, Tandoori Nights first aired in 1985, its six half-hour episodes produced by Picture Palace Productions. The series returned for an additional six installments in 1987; these were assembled by Angel Productions. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
