Tom Selleck plays the drifter Rafe Covington in this respectful adaptation of the Louis L'Amour novel Crossfire Trail, presented by Turner Network Television. A romantic Western, Crossfire Trail follows Rafe as he struggles to honor his vow to a dying friend to protect his wife and daughter and their Wyoming homestead. Virginia Madsen plays the widow who questions Rafe's intentions and unwittingly sides with the bad guys headed by land owner Bruce Barkow (Mark Harmon). The producers went to great lengths to find historic buildings and props to lend an authentic air to the production. The film was directed by Simon Wincer, who also paired with Selleck on 1990's Quigley Down Under. Life is sweet for high-school English teacher and sports coach Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline); he's still living where he grew up, he has a good relationship with his father (Wilford Brimley) and mother (Debbie Reynolds), he's respected by his community, and he's about to marry Emily (Joan Cusack), his fiancée of three years. Fearing she was about to become an old maid, Emily has shed 75 pounds for the upcoming nuptials. But first, the entire town of Greenleaf, IN, settles in to watch the Academy Award telecast, because young stud star Cameron Drake (Matt Dillon), who attended Greenleaf High, has been nominated for an Oscar. What's more, he wins, and in his acceptance speech, singles out Howard -- and announces his favorite teacher is gay. Everyone in town is thunderstruck, including Howard himself. The media descend on the town, particularly Peter Malloy (Tom Selleck), whose job is hanging by a thread. Even worse, Howard's principal Tom Halliwell (Bob Newhart) is shaken by the news, and is toying with firing Howard. The beleaguered teacher tries to convince everyone (and himself) that he's as straight and macho as the next guy; he even tries to follow the rules on a motivational tape, "Be a Man." But his fondness for Barbra Streisand, his theatrical mannerisms, and the fact that he and Emily have yet to make love make everyone's eyebrows stay permanently raised. Meanwhile, out in Hollywood, Cameron, who's really a decent guy, learns about the problems his impulsive comment has caused, and heads back to Greenleaf to see what he can do to help. A mountain man goes on a routine manhunt and finds himself embroiled in solving a supernatural mystery in this fantasy/adventure. The tale is set in the wilds of Montana. Lewis Gates is a heavy-drinking tracker who is called to sober up and hit the backcountry to find three murderous fugitives from the local prison. For him it is a routine assignment. But then a strange thing happens. He is almost upon their camp when he hears several whoops and shouts. He goes to the site, but finds nothing but blood, a lone arrow, and a brief sight of someone fleeing on horseback. He travels back to town and tells his story, but no one believes him, least of all the sheriff whose late daughter had been married to the mountain man before she drowned -- something the sheriff still blames the tracker for. But Gates is by then obsessed with solving the mystery and so forces himself into the library to do a little research. He soon learns that over the years 17 such unsolved mysteries have occurred and that in 1935 authorities brought to jail a naked Indian boy found running along the railroad tracks. They locked him in jail, but the boy somehow escaped and disappeared. The tracker enlists the aide of a female anthropologist who explains that over a century ago Cheyenne dog soldiers had lived in the area until the Europeans slaughtered them. The two travel deep into the wilderness and at last discover a strange waterfall. Behind it lies an ancient Cheyenne village, a peaceful place much like the Shangri-La of adventure-fantasy movies past. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

In this blend of fantasy and romantic comedy, a man isn't sure if he's stuck between past and present or if his imagination is simply working overtime. It seems that his name is really James, he's the host of a talk show in Los Angeles, and he keeps having a recurring dream in which he and his co-workers are characters in a tale of knights in shining armor. Eric, his boss, looks just like the King, and Roni is a dead ringer for Sean, a high-powered businessman who is organizing a hostile takeover of James' company. However, things really start to get interesting for James when he meets Valerie, who is directing a television commercial at James' studio. She bears a striking resemblance to Dahlin the gypsy girl, and James can't help but tell her that she's the girl of his dreams. But are they really dreams, or memories of a past life? Cocoon 2: The Return, like most sequels, relies a bit too heavily on one's familiarity with the first film. Without dwelling too long on Cocoon #1, we can observe that it ended with a group of senior citizens heading for the distant planet of Antarea, hoping to find a new, rewarding and elongated life. Cocoon 2 picks up the action five years later: The Antareans return to earth to check on the damage caused to their life-regenerating cocoons by earthquakes. Coming along for the ride are the elderly couples whom we met in the first film. Also carried over from the first Cocoon are young ferryboat captain Steve Guttenberg and gorgeous Antarean Tahnee Welch, who resume their interplanetary romance. Oldster Jack Gilford, whose beloved wife died in Cocoon, likewise finds romance in the form of Elaine Stritch. A secondary plot involves an insidious secret government plan to exploit the Antareans, which is foiled by sympathetic researcher Courteney Cox. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
