Italian director Fausto Brizzi's romantic comedy Ex draws from an ensemble framework and an all-star European cast, including Claudio Bisio, Nancy Brilli, Cristiana Capotondi and Cecile Castel, to meditate on the various situations engendered by the presence of former lovers - from the instances in which affection and devotion have regressed into hatred, to the cases where friendship blossoms from a prior romance, to the instances where love lingers on indefinitely. Paolo (Sergio Castellitto) hasn't seen his actress girlfriend Francesca (Lina Sastri) in quite a while - not since she went on tour with a play. They broke up just as she was leaving on the tour, and he was expected to move out of their apartment while she was away. When the story opens, he is still in their apartment. Rather than moving out, he has been commiserating with his friends, Enrico (Nicola Pistola), an actor who has probably also been Francesca's boyfriend, and Giuliano (Roberto Citran). Giuliano is engaged to Sophie (Nancy Brilli), and is madly jealous of her. Why he consents to Paolo inviting Sophie along as his "date" for a dinner with his ex on the occasion of her return to Rome is difficult to understand. At any rate, she finally shows up with her boyfriend Piero (Pino Quartullo), and what began as an awkward reunion becomes a more passionate encounter. This film, which marks the directing debut of Ricky Tognazzi, the son of the famous director Ugo Tognazzi, is based on a popular play by Claudio Bigagli. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this slightly science-fictiony romantic comedy, Ivan is a nice but rather clueless young man who works for a woman about his own age, a tough and ruthless person who is all business. He is so clueless that he is about to marry this unsavory person, much to the dismay of his ex-ballerina mother. He is doing his banking one day when a group of robbers comes in, stealing not only from the bank, but from its customers. He narrowly manages to escape them by heading for the basement and taking a doorway he never noticed before which should lead to the basement of the Chinese restaurant next door. Instead, he finds himself on the beach on another planet, one with two suns. There, he meets a professor and his daughter. The girl falls in love with him at first sight and returns through the doorway after him to persuade him to marry her. Other denizens of the second world also go through the doorway, and before the end of the show, a number of unlikely marriages have been proposed and accepted. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this sympathetic biography of Claretta Petacci, Benito Mussolini's mistress of 10 years, the Petacci family is a primary source of information -- which introduces a definite bias on how she is viewed. Claretta met Mussolini in the mid-'30s and remained with him after he was dismissed in 1943 by King Victor Emmanuel (American and Allied forces invaded Sicily and started north to Rome at that time). Claretta's family also fled to the north, where Mussolini was set up in a puppet dictatorship by the Germans until the end of the war. Photographs of Mussolini and Claretta hanging from a gas-station pole in 1945 while crowds stare at their bodies were disseminated worldwide, yet information on them has been kept in the classified files of the Italian government. In this docudrama, Claretta is played by Claudia Cardinale and Claretta's younger sister Miriam Petacci, still alive in 1984, plays herself as she "meets" with a television reporter (Catherine Spaak) at Claretta's tomb to talk about her famous sister's life. Claretta and Mussolini (Gabriele D'Annunzio) first get together on the estate of a poet who supported Mussolini and were not separated once they became lovers. U.S. Army newsreels add verisimilitude to the story, but the script is too superficial and the treatment too overtly sentimental to sustain interest and may even alienate some viewers. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
