A mother dealing with a difficult child without her husband finds companionship in this drama from Italy. Marina (Claudia Pandolfi) sets out on a vacation in a small town in Northwest Italy with her two-year-old son Marco in tow; while her husband will be meeting up with her in a few weeks, for the moment she's looking after Marco by herself, and this happens at a bad time for both mother and child. Marco has the colic and is in a constant bad mood, and after a few days Marina is at a loss about what to do with her fussy, frequently crying child. Marina is staying in a apartment building that's also home to Manfred (Filippo Timi), a moody wilderness guide, and when he hears some strange noises one evening, he discovers Marco has had an accident and Marina is too panicked to react. After taking Marina and Marco to the hospital, Manfred has them stay with his sister-in-law Bianca (Michela Cescon), who has more experience in dealing with difficult children. As Marina bonds with Bianca, she finds herself increasingly attracted to Manfred, though she learns he carries some emotional baggage of his own. Quando La Notte (aka When The Night) was directed and co-written by Cristina Comencini, who helped adapt the screenplay from her own novel. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In Italy circa 1966, four female friends meet regularly over a game of canasta, to discuss their hopes, fears and concerns. Frustrations also emerge - many tied to the women's histories of extinguishing personal dreams in exchange for the false promises advertised as nuptial bliss. Thus begins helmer Enzo Monteleone's intimate ensembler Due Partite. The setting then shifts to Italy in 1996, when the women's daughters begin meeting for canasta, reflect on their own lives, and ponder a tragedy that befell one of the mothers. The cast features Margherita Buy, Claudia Pandolfi, Isabella Ferrari and several other mainstays of the Italian screen. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Dark shadows from a woman's past come back to haunt her in this drama from writer and director Cristina Comencini. Sabina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) would seem to have a charmed life -- she has a successful career as a voice actress, a loving and supportive relationship with her boyfriend, Franco (Alessio Boni), and a pair of close friends she can confide in, Maria (Angela Finocchiaro) and Emilia (Stefania Rocca). But Sabina's contented existence is shattered when she inadvertently dredges up a long-dormant memory of how during her childhood she was sexually abused by her father. Confused and ashamed, Sabina finds it impossible to talk about her memories with Franco and her friends, but the terrible images refuse to go away. Seeking closure, Sabina travels to the United States to talk to the one person who may have a true insight to her problems, her brother, Daniele (Luigi Lo Cascio). Cristina Comencini follows up her critically acclaimed 1998 opus Marriage (a funny though sensitive look at marriage in modern life) with this star-crossed comedy. Mafioso Michele Verrio (Michele Placido) has both a wife (Angelica Ippolito) and a long-suffering mistress, Lunetta (Lunetta Savino). Years ago, Verrio's henchmen bombed the car of Lunetta's muckraking brother Sergio (Francesco Paolantoni) after one of his scoops painted a rather negative portrait of the aging mobster. The incident prompted Sergio to go into hiding up north, leaving behind his child Sabina (Eleonora Sergio) and his wife Mara (Laura Morante). Mara eventually got remarried to Emilio (Emilio Solfrizzi), a car salesman, while Sabina went off to study in an American university -- only to return pregnant and engaged to Verrio's son Giovanni (Marco Morandi). Soon the two families that were once sworn enemies now have to try to get along. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

On his way home from work one evening, Bernardo (Fabrizio Bentivoglio), a lawyer, witnesses a young man falling to his death out of a window high above him. He is disturbed by this more than one might usually be, because the window was in his own apartment, and he soon finds out that his wife was there when the young man leapt to his death. It is only natural, then, that he is driven to investigate the circumstances that lead to this situation. In this detective thriller, he and the policeman Carlo Plane (Massimo Wertmuller) independently struggle to make sense out of this bizarre event, which appears to be connected in some fashion to one of Bernardo's current cases. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
