René Clément Movies

While an architecture student at Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Rene Clement painstakingly assembled the animated film Cesar les Galous. He made his live-action directorial debut in collaboration with Jacques Tati with the 1936 short Soigne ton Gauche. Clement spent the latter half of the 1930s filming documentaries in the French territories of Africa and Arabia. In 1937, he and archaeologist Jules Barthou were in Yemen preparing for the documentary short L'Arabie Interdite when they were captured, jailed and given death sentences. The two were freed and Clement returned to France with the film. In 1946, Clement acted as technical consultant on Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast (1946); this enabled him to finally direct a feature film on his own, the highly regarded "French resistance" melodrama La Bataille du rail, which blended the verisimilitude of Clement's documentaries with the story-telling skills he'd gleaned from Cocteau. Though he'd begun his career with a cartoon and gained his postwar reputation by toiling on a Cocteau fantasy, Clement emerged as one of the postwar era's staunchest advocates of Neo-Realism. He also became fascinated with the challenge of filming under near-impossible conditions; witness his Les Maudits, a submarine drama lensed within a genuine (and none too spacious) sub. Rene Clement's masterpiece was Forbidden Games, a haunting tale of war's carnage told from a child's point of view. The film was honored with multiple industry awards, including the American Oscar. Almost as unforgettable was Gervaise (1956), an ultra-realistic Emile Zola adaptation starring Monica Vitti. Clement was known as a superb craftsman and often took his sweet time making films, but despite the time and effort expended, his subsequent output was of decidedly uneven quality. With the exception of Plein Soleil/Purple Noon (1960), the film that made Alain Delon an international star, and Le Passager de la Pluie/Rider on the Rain (1970), one of the few films to show the gentler side of Charles Bronson, Clement's films were generally poorly received at international box-offices. One of his more famous failures was the big-budgeted Is Paris Burning?, an international co-production featuring a script by Coppola and an all-star cast that fell far short of its concept. Clement made his final film, Le Baby-Sitter in 1975. Within a decade, Clement was nearly forgotten. Nearly, but not quite, for in 1984, he was awarded a special Cesar to honor a lifetime of achievement.

This English-language French production, directed by Rene Clement is a psychological/spy thriller, and features an excellent score by Gilbert Becaud. Faye Dunaway is Jill, the wife of a former industrial spy (played by Frank Langella). Her husband's employers are not perfectly reconciled to his retirement, however, even though he is firm in his refusal to rejoin them. In 1944, with Paris on the verge of Liberation by the allies, Adolph Hitler ordered that the City of Light be blown up and burned to the ground. General Dietrich Von Choltitz, after much rumination, decided that he didn't want to go down in history as the man who destroyed Paris. His refusal to follow Hitler's orders would make him a pariah in Germany for the rest of his life; nor was his gesture ever rewarded by the Allies. From this very human story in the midst of one of the most inhuman conflicts in history grew the screenplay (by Gore Vidal and Francis Ford Coppola) of the all-star, internationally produced Is Paris Burning? Whereas the earlier The Longest Day was able to support a castful of celebrities and brief subplot vignettes, Is Paris Burning? seems more weighted down than weighty. Still, a modern audience will have fun playing "spot the star" throughout the film, especially when those spotted stars include the likes of Gert Frobe (as Choltitz), Jean-Paul Belmondo, Alain Delon, Kirk Douglas (as Patton), Glenn Ford (as Bradley), Yves Montand, Simone Signoret, Robert Stack, and even Anthony Perkins as a wide-eyed GI. No matter the title, the film stars Simone Signoret as a world-weary French aristocrat who finds a purpose in life by joining the World War II Resistance. She is ordered by her fellow undergrounders to hide allied paratrooper Stuart Whitman in her own country estate. At first resenting this intrusion in her life, Signoret falls in love with Whitman, and together they try to escape into Spain. Ulisse (Delon) is a naive young man out looking for a job after being released from the army. He drops the offer he gets from a group of fascists to go in with the Fossatis, a family of anarchists (unknown to him). Humor is supplied in the misadventures of Ulisse and a few others, such as two would-be explosive experts (Ugo Tognazzi and Aroldo Tieri). Initially, the pair enjoy the good life in Italy, often to the anger and dismay of Philippe's much put-upon fiancee Marge (Marie Laforet). However, as Tom's funds begin to run dry, it becomes more and more apparent that Philippe has no intentions of returning to the U.S., forcing Tom to consider more nefarious means of maintaining his extravagant lifestyle. Purple Noon is adapted from Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, and like Alfred Hitchcock's classic Strangers on a Train, also based on Highsmith's work, the theme of identity transference is dominant. Emile Zola's obscure novel entitled "L'Assommoir" has been made into several films. This is one of the best. In this two hour movie an entire mini-series worth of problems have been compressed about a young woman to whom life has dealt hard blows. Set in the 19th-century, this woman deals with an alcoholic husband while doing everything within her power to keep the family together. An incredibly depressing movie in which the protagonist keeps on trying no matter what besets her, the performances are creditable and the direction superb. Self-involved characters give viewers no one to cheer for, but this movie received multiple awards, ranging from Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival to an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film. Relying heavily on voiceover narration and subjective camerawork, the film has Gerard Phillipe in the title role. Believing himself to be love with his wife's best friend (Natasha Parry), Ripois pours out his heart to her by recounting his past amours. Though he has known many women, he has never truly loved any of them. This has proved more troublesome for Ripois than for the ladies in his life, but somehow he never learns his lesson--not even during the film's final scene. Adapted by Francois Boyer, director Rene Clement, and two others from Boyer's novel, the story focuses on Paulette (Brigitte Fossey), a five-year-old refugee from Paris taken in by a peasant family after her parents are killed during a bombardment of a civilian convoy. Michel Dolle (Georges Pujouly), the family's 11-year-old son, becomes her best friend, and they create a cemetery in which Paulette's dog is interred, along with other animals and insects, some of whom the children kill themselves. The Dolle family is too busy feuding with the Gouards, their neighbors, to notice the absence of the children. Eventually, authorities locate Paulette and insist that she be placed in an orphanage for legal adoption. Unsentimental and yet heartbreaking, Forbidden Games demonstrates the strategies of children who witness war to deal with the constant presence of death. A French-Italian production, the film sagaciously teamed the most popular stars of each nation: France's Jean Gabin and Italy's Isa Miranda. Gabin is cast as a murderer who escapes prosecution by stowing away on a ship. Suffering from a toothache, he disembarks in Italy in search of a dentist, only to have his few possessions stolen. La Bataille du Rail (Battle of the Rails) is regarded by many cineastes as the one truly great French "resistance" film. Based on fact, the episodic plotline details the courageous efforts by French railray workers to sabotage Nazi reinforcement-troop trains. The film's thesis is that this underground activity was largely responsible for the allied victory on D-Day. Writer-director Rene Clement enhanced the reality of the story by filming on actual locations and using genuine railway employees and resistance fighters in the cast.
