Directed by Taylor Hackford, this biopic profiles the life of legendary musician Ray Charles. Despite humble beginnings and the loss of his eyesight due to glaucoma at the age of six, Charles, depicted by Jamie Foxx, would nonetheless become an icon in both the music industry and the civil rights era. While the film delves into his problems with drugs and women, the bulk of the story details his career; among the highlights of that career are 12 Grammy awards and 11 R&B chart-toppers, such as "Unchain My Heart," "Hit the Road, Jack," "Georgia," "Doin' the Mess Around," and "Hallelujah I Just Love Her So." Also among the cast are Larenz Tate as Quincy Jones, as well as Regina King, Kerry Washington, and Clifton Powell. Charles' son, Ray Charles Jr. helped produce the film. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

Elsewhere, the detectives investigate the murder of a woman and the victim's ex-boyfriend, who at first glance would seem to have plenty of motive. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The sons of a Chicago fireman who gave his life in the performance of his duties, firefighting brothers Kurt Russell and William Baldwin carry their lifelong sibling rivalry into their work. Russell is convinced that Baldwin hasn't got what it takes to remain in the fire department. Baldwin is transferred to a "safe" assignment, assisting arson investigator Robert DeNiro, who is trying to make sense of a series of fires involving an oxygen-induced ball of fire called a backdraft. The investigation reveals a link between corrupt alderman J. T. Walsh and imprisoned pyromaniac Donald Sutherland. The trail of evidence leads Baldwin to suspect that his brother Russell, a much-decorated hero, may be the "inside" man setting up the arsons. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The first of many sequels to the original, X-rated, soft-core pornographic drama Emmanuelle (1974), this follow-up once again stars Sylvia Kristel in the title role of the beautiful, sexually adventurous model. Emmanuelle sails home from Thailand to Hong Kong and her ambassador husband Jean (Umberto Orsini), with whom she has an open marriage. She finds that Jean has invited a handsome American named Christopher (Frederic Lagache) to stay with them, and she tries to seduce the houseguest, who demurs, preferring the company of Asian women. Jean, meanwhile, has been having an affair with Laura (Florence Lafuma). Both Laura and Christopher find the sexual liberation of Jean and Emmanuelle's marriage surprising, but eventually, Emannuelle and Christopher consummate their desire. Later, during a trip to Bali, Jean and his amorous wife sexually initiate Laura's stepdaughter Anna-Maria (Catherine Rivet). Like most of the subsequent films in the Emmanuelle series, Emmanuelle L'Antivierge is highly episodic in form and remarkably well-photographed. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi
