After Patsy (Joanna Lumley) manages to incinerate the Monsoons' kitchen, she and Edina (Jennifer Saunders) take to hanging out in the living room. The only problem is that Saffy (Julia Sawalha) has a rare, though clandestine, date planned for that very room. As Eddy and her monstrous friend torture Saffy by staying put, Gran (June Whitfield) accidentally locks the three women in the living room on her way to the chemist's, leaving Saffy inconsolable and Pats and Eddy bored. Talk turns to sex as Edina tortures Saffy with questions, resorting to a Cosmopolitan sex quiz to elicit information from the girl. Saffy and Patsy fight bitterly, the gaunt fashion plate jealous of the privileges her young rival has enjoyed. In flashbacks, we see the births of all three characters -- including an over-the-top sequence in which Patsy's pretentious mother compares her daughter to a tumor and gives birth to the accompaniment of bad Beat poetry. Eventually, Gran returns home, freeing the trio from the displeasure of each other's forcible company. Originally broadcast on BBC 1 on March 10, 1994, Absolutely Fabulous: Birth marked series two, episode six of this popular Brit-com. Eleanor Bron, originally seen in Absolutely Fabulous: Magazine during series one, reprises her role as Patsy's mom. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Covert Action, badly directed by Romolo Guerrieri, is a predictable, dull espionage drama which concerns an ex-CIA agent (David Janssen) hunted by killers because of a book he has written about his experiences in the agency. While Janssen give a passable performance, the film is poorly plotted and badly directed. Shot on location in Greece, the lovely scenery is the film's only redeeming quality. ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide

This XXX sex film is of somewhat historical significance. Deep Throat is generally considered to be the movie that "legitimized" hardcore sex films because of its professionalism. This movie, however, which came out a year before Deep Throat, is actually far more professionally made than its more famous counterpart. Its plot of a sexually frustrated housewife turning to her oversexed, large-breasted girlfriend is hardly innovative, but its technical polish (excellent lighting, sharp editing, smooth direction, some deft and clever camerawork and a clear audio track), the impressive acting by the leads, and the fact that there is absolutely NO rock or disco on the soundtrack raises this film several levels above its contemporaries. ~ Brian Gusse, All Movie Guide

Flesh was filmmaker Paul Morrissey's first production for Andy Warhol. The story concerns a bisexual hustler (Joe Dallesandro) who does tricks so that he can pay for his wife's lover's abortion. The film made headlines when it was confiscated by the police during one of its earliest showings in 1970. Though this event is unlikely to repeat itself, Flesh is still explicit enough to elicit gasps from even the most jaded of underground-film enthusiasts. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Add Mildred Pierce to QueueAdd Mildred Pierce to top of Queue
Joan Crawford won an Academy Award for her bravura portrayal of the titular heroine in Mildred Pierce. The original James M. Cain novel concerned a tawdry waitress who slept her way to financial security so as to provide a rosy future for her beloved daughter, only to be rewarded by having her true love stolen away by that same daughter. Ranald McDougall's screenplay tones down the novel's sexual content, enhancing its film noir value by adding a sordid murder. The film opens with oily lounge lizard Monte Beragon (Zachary Scott) being pumped full of bullets. Croaking out the name "Mildred", he collapses and dies. Both the police and the audience are led to believe that the murderer is chain-restaurant entrepreneur Mildred Pierce (Crawford), who takes the time to relate some of her sordid history. As the flashback begins, we see Mildred unhappily married to philandering Bert Pierce (Bruce Bennett). She divorces him, keeping custody of her two beloved daughters, Veda (Ann Blyth) and Kay (Jo Anne Marlowe). To keep oldest daughter Veda in comparative luxury, Mildred ends up taking a waitressing position at a local restaurant. With the help of slimy real estate agent Wally Fay (Jack Carson), she eventually buys her own establishment, which grows into a chain of restaurants throughout Southern California. Meanwhile, Mildred smothers Veda in affection and creature comforts. She goes so far as to enter into a loveless marriage with the wealthy Monty Beragon in order to improve her social standing; Beragon repays the favor by living the life of a layabout playboy, much to Mildred's dismay -- and possible financial ruin. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The title tells all in the PRC quickie Delinquent Daughters. June Carlson and Teala Loring play a couple of mature-looking teenagers named June and Sally, whose parents never have any time for them. As a result, June and Sally fall in with a bad crowd and get mixed up in illicit drinking, wild parties and petty crimes. Vivacious French-Canadian comedienne Fifi D'Orsay is cast against type as a hard-boiled roadhouse hostess, while Joe Devlin, who spent most of the 1940s playing Mussolini lookalikes, represents The Law. As was the case in most films of this ilk, Delinquent Daughters ends up in a courtroom, with a stern-voiced judge (Frank McGlynn) admonishing both the girls and their neglectful parents. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
