A businessman who wants to please his parents hatches a scheme that backfires in several ways in this romantic comedy from China. Huo Qifa (Richie Jen) is a successful investment banker who is engaged to marry Rachel (Kate Tsui), a thoroughly modern woman who teaches pole dancing for fitness at a health club. Huo is worried that his very traditional parents won't approve of Rachel, so he hires Liu Zao (Fan Bingbing), a recent college graduate looking for work, to pose as his girlfriend. Huo's idea is for Liu to act as forward and offensive as possible, so when he springs Rachel on them, she'll seem a great relief in comparison. However, when Huo introduces Liu to his father (Yuen Wah) and mother (Yang Zhiying), they're delighted by her charm, and Huo's folks reap the benefits of Liu's advice on spicing up their marriage. Liu also brings along her landlord Alex (Ian Powers) as a traveling companion, and he finds himself the object of not-unwanted attention from Huo's sister (Liu Yi) as well as her boyfriend (You Hang). As Hou's family falls for Liu, he finds himself following suit, which makes matters all the more sticky when Rachel drops by. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Kam (veteran Hong Kong comic actress Sandra Ng) is making a withdrawal from an ATM on New Year's Eve when she's held up at knifepoint by the desperate Bong (Eric Tsang), who is distressed to learn that Kam doesn't even have enough money in her account to make a withdrawal. The two agree to leave and go their separate ways, when a power outage traps them in the kiosk. Kam tries to cheer Bong up with an amusing story about her life as a prostitute. This leads to a conversation that lasts through the night, and flashbacks depict Kam's evolution, from underage "fishball girl" to popular showgirl (who wins over clients doing a deft impression of Jackie Chan circa Drunken Master) to masseuse to long-in-the-tooth hooker. Outside historical events converge with Kum's story as she weaves her tale, detailing everything from her encounter with a celebrity (Andy Lau as himself) to her unrequited love for a mysterious gangster, Yeh (Wu Kwan of Stanley Kwan's Lan Yu), to her longtime friendship with a former client, Professor Chan (Tony Leung). There's also an unplanned pregnancy, which leads to an opportunistic romance with Richard (Felix Wong), a wealthy businessman. This 2002 comedy Golden Chicken, directed by Samson Chiu, spawned a 2003 sequel, Golden Chicken 2. The first film was shown at the Film Society of Lincoln Center's survey Recent Films from Hong Kong in 2004. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

When a young farmer comes to Hong Kong with his wife and daughters, he expects to lead a better existence living in the home of his father - the first expectation among many that will come to a crashing demise. His father is a poor coolie who can barely manage his own bed space and certainly cannot help his son. As the man and his family begin to come to grips with life on the street in Hong Kong, with policemen and thugs, new friends and odd strangers, the humor in their encounters in the living city begins to lessen, leading into situations that are potentially dangerous and certainly depressing. A resolution of these two attitudes in the first and second half of the film would have kept it more in the league of director Alfred Cheung's first, ungrammatically titled success Let's Make Laugh. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

So he ignores his father's advice when he meets an attractive woman who is a beautician for dead people -- she fixes up the bodies at funeral homes -- and he marries her. But the consummation of the marriage does not happen until several complications and mishaps are cleared away -- just another series of disconnected segments that comprise this uneven film. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
