Cardigans singer Nina Persson makes her screen debut opposite director/co-scripter/star Amir Chamdin in an achingly romantic tale of two would-be lovers longing to connect during a sweltering Stockholm summer. The tear is 1975, and immigrant worker Juan (Chamdin) works around the clock while anxiously awaiting the arrival of his wife. Upon meeting at the restaurant that the hard-working immigrant cleans by night, Amir and pretty local Juli (Persson) take an immediate liking to one another. Over the course of the following week, the smitten pair spends every available moment together. As the day Amir's wife is set to arrive draws near, Amir and Juli ponder just what will become of their powerful yet fragile bond. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Over the course of a single year, the disparate lives of several modern Swedes gradually intersect. Based on a short story series by Reider Jonsson (best known for "My Life as a Dog) and directed by Daniel Bergman (son of Sweden's greatest director Ingmar Bergman), the focus is on the more mundane aspects of the character's lives, and the tone is low-key and laid back. The various characters are introduced aboard a train. One passenger is returning home to make peace with his father, a fisherman. Elsewhere, a husband and wife argue in front of their daughter about a pending divorce while a pair of young Slavic tourists bill and coo. In another spot, a young woman flirts with a handsome older man. All that subsequently occurs between the characters is reflected in the deep blue eyes of a beautiful woman. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In a farce that starts out galloping but then stumbles and essentially collapses, a few crooks end up cheating other crooks as the story bobbles along between Sweden and Cuba. First a sleazy used-car salesman cons an innocent hair stylist into buying a wreck of a car. Next, the stylist's crooked brother gets out of prison and decides to fleece the car dealer in turn. And so it goes, back and forth, until everything seems to get out of hand, and the story and characters are buried in the process. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This uneven comedy is set in the 1920s and stars Janne Carlsson, one of Sweden's favorite comics, in the role of Albert Jansson, a fisherman who turns from fish to foul in order to make a better living. In a near-parody of its cinematic predecessors, Smugglarkungen is also set in a bucolic coastal community where love and the forces of virtue face heavy-duty challenges. Albert is an honest fisherman until he succeeds with a vengeance at bootlegging and cannot but enjoy the happy consequences of his success: namely, the physical attractions of the fair Sickan (Nina Gunke) and equally appealing Grethe (Sanne Salomonsen, one of Denmark's more popular rock stars). Albert's love-life is rudely interrupted when the "smuggling king" Strauss (Ernst Gunther) and his minions resent his intrusion on their lucrative turf, and to make matters worse, Lt. Winkel (Bjorn Skifs) is sent from Stockholm to investigate possible customs violations in the area. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

When Gary (Goesta Ekman), a somewhat staid and stable architect, and Lasse (Janne Carlsson), a good-time mechanic, end up becoming friends just at the time both of their wives have left town for a week, they each have their idyllic time-off disrupted. Gary wants a bit of introspective relaxation, and Lasse wants some time with his buddies and a few women on the side. Instead, the architect heads into some wild antics (in one scene a bank robber gets the muzzle of his gun stuck in Gary's pocket) that leave him exhausted but happy, and the mechanic ends up giving a lecture on urban planning. Considering that the architect helps Lasse realize how much he appreciates his own home and children, and that Lasse helps him realize that a little fun goes a long way, the week was pretty good after all. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Sweden's reputation for military neutrality has been maintained by its civilian army -- an army composed largely of civilians who are required to do several weeks service in the military each year. The true story of the last two criminals to suffer capital punishment in Sweden is the basis for this historical drama. In 1876, Tector and Hjert (Janne Calsson and Hans Klinga) had come to the end of their liberty and awaited execution for an accidental murder they committed. For years before that, they had tried to make a living of some kind by petty theft, bouncing into and out of prison, all the while dreaming of getting enough money to migrate to America. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
