Yves Montand is Victor Valance, a long-lost father who has come home to his brood of daughters and his mother in order to weazel some money out of them to front a gambling casino. Unable to tell them the real reason he wants the money, he just says it is for a country house for them - though his oldest daughter Pauline (Isabelle Adjani) is immediately suspicious of these surprising good intentions. It does not take her long to find out why he needed the cash, and she sets out to sabotage his project and get the money back, with a vengeance. Her attitude changes just as fast when she realizes that gangsters are out to take over her father's casino project - which would equally cost her the family's money. Bruce Dern stars in this disturbing shocker about a mentally unbalanced tattoo artist named Karl Kinski, who is hired to put a series of fake tattoos on fashion model Maddy (Maud Adams) as part of an advertising campaign. But Kinski becomes obsessed with Maddy and decides to kidnap her. Keeping her a captive, he uses her body as a living canvas for his tattoo designs. During its initial release, the film raised the ire of feminist groups because of the ad campaign that featured a naked woman bound at the ankles. In Louis Malle's apocalyptic fantasy Black Moon, Lily (Cathryn Harrison, granddaughter of Rex) drives down a lonesome road, and soon finds herself in a alternate world full of non sequiturs and bizarre characters. At times, this looks like a David Lynch film, what with an old woman conversing with a rat, a pack of naked children chasing a pig, a talking unicorn, a strange set of possibly incestuous siblings (one of whom is "underground" film star Joe Dallesandro), and several other warped set pieces. Malle reportedly culled inspiration for the narrative of this film from his own dreams. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
