The rousing adventure novel by Sir Walter Scott was adapted for this swashbuckler. Richard Todd stars as Robert Roy MacGregor, a clan leader in 18th century Scotland attempting to lead his fellow countrymen in a rebellion against the heavy-handed rule of England's King George I. When the king replaces a sympathetic politician with a lackey working against Rob Roy, it's up to the hardy Scotsman to defeat his enemies without the support of a powerful ally, while also romancing and marrying his true love (Glynis Johns). Rob Roy, the Highland Rogue (1953) was the last of 21 British films produced jointly by Disney and RKO. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Filmed in 1938, My Irish Molly was released in US in 1940 to capitalize on the popularity of Maureen O'Hara. The actress enjoys top billing in the American prints, but the film's real star is juvenile music-hall star Binkie Stuart as the titular Molly. An orphan girl, poor but plucky Molly is continually persecuted by her harridan of an aunt (Maureen Moore), who withholds the fact that the girl is an heiress. The return of emigrant Bob (Philip Reed) from New York to the Auld Sod-the better to be reunited with his sweetheart Eileen (O'Hara)--leads to Molly's rescue from her tormentor. In other words, My Irish Molly is a Shirley Temple flick without Shirley Temple. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The all-purpose title The Big Noise was dusted off twice in 1936, once by Hollywood's Warner Bros. and once by 20th Century-Fox's British facilities. The British Big Noise stars Alastair Sim as the milquetoast clerk in a huge oil company. When it looks as though the oil executives will be apprehended by the authorities for their various misappropriations, the execs conspire to find a fall guy. Sim is elected, but once he's placed in a position of authority, he manages to rout the scoundrels and save the firm. To avoid confusion with this Big Noise, Hollywood's Big Noise was retitled Modern Madness. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Legendary Scots entertainer Harry Lauder makes one of his rare screen appearances in End of the Road. Lauder plays John Macgregor, a travelling song-and-dance man who manages to remain chipper and upbeat despite the worst that life has to offer. Among the woes and travails facing Macgregor in the course of the film is the death of his beloved daughter and stage partner Jean (Ethel Glendinning). Some of the characters in the film are afforded a happy ending through Macgregor's intervention, but he himself must walk off into the horizon alone, a la Chaplin. Patchily produced, End of the Road at least affords an opportunity to watch one of the world's most beloved entertainers in action. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The plotline of the Audrey and Waveney Carlton play Gay Love was so well known in 1934 that Variety considered a synopsis "a waste of time." For the benefit of those not familiar with the story, here's a quick run-down: Music-hall comedienne Gloria Fellows (Florence Desmond) falls in love with her sister's well-heeled fiancé Lord Tony Eaton (Ivor McLaren). Good-hearted Gloria is willing to step aside for her sister's sake, but a happy ending is in store for both girls. Famed impressionist Desmond goes through her usual celebrity repertoire, including Garbo, Mae West and ZaSu Pitts, while "Red Hot Mamma" Sophie Tucker plays herself, which is all any of her fans could have asked for. The film's production-number highlight is a New Years' Eve ball, which must have consumed three-fourths of the budget. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Somehow or other, our clerical hero manages to talk several major performers into participating in his insignificant extravaganza. Among the guest stars are such regional British favorites as Clapham and Dwyer, Keppel and Betty, Jimmy Jade, Roy Fox and His Band and Buddy Bradley's Rhythm Girls. Chances are that On the Air might never have been released to the U.S. had not TV created an insatiable demand for old British movies in the early 1950s. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
