Claude Brasseur Movies

Claude Brasseur is the son of French film performers Pierre Brasseur and Odette Joyeaux. The younger Brasseur's own entree into films occurred with 1956's Le Pays d'ou je viens. While he has appeared in fewer memorable films than his celebrated father, Brasseur has been well-represented in such productions as Truffault's Such a Gorgeous Kid Like Me (1972) and Yves Roberts' Pardon Mon Affaire (1976). Claude Brasseur has also thrived on French television and in French/Canadian and Italian films. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Though it seems impossible that anyone but another lobster could be offended by the Italian-American domestic comedy Lobster for Breakfast, viewers should be warned that the film is rife with bathroom humor. But, hey, it's justified: the hero, played by Enrico Montesano is a travelling toilet salesman. Aspiring for a better life, Montesano is sidetracked by romantic and financial travails. One of his amours is played by French actress Claudine Auger, just as gorgeous as she was way back in the 1965 James Bond escapade Thunderball. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The most powerful officers of a bank are implicated in a financial scandal, despite their efforts to disassociate themselves from it. When the top brass fire Henri Rainier (Jean-Louis Trintignant) because one of his clients has been accused of fraud, he doesn't take it lying down. He knows that the man who actually approved the client's loans was the bank's director. He must expose these and other shady financial transactions by his superiors in order to avoid being framed by them. This straightforward drama, which depicts the anxious situation of a man without allies, caught, despite his best efforts, in the throes of a vast land fraud, is based on a true story and was inexplicably very popular in France. It won Césars for "Best Screenplay" and "Best Director," and the Prix Louis Delluc, a venerable annual prize given by French journalists for the best French film of the year. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Nominated for an Academy Award, Claude Sautet's A Simple Story (Une Histoire Simple) examines the behavior of its characters as dictated by their environment. Romy Schneider plays Marie, a fortysomething working woman whose tiresome existence has prompted her to inaugurate an affair. Marie eventually parts with her lover, aborting the pregnancy resulting from her liaison. She pauses long enough to take stock of her current situation, and to muse on its possible outcome. Though exuding star quality throughout, Romy Schneider is thoroughly believable as the essentially ordinary, nonspectacular heroine. Her behavior is not that of a wealthy play-actress but a genuine bourgeois woman emotionally hemmed in by her social strata. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

L'Etat Sauvage is based on the novel by Georges Conchon which won the highly esteemed Prix de Goncourt. The story chronicles the mindless racism of both the departing French colonial overlords and the emergent black Africans in a newly emerging African state. Laurence (Marie-Christine Barrault) suffers the outrage of her white acquaintances, including her former lover Gravenoir (Claude Brasseur) and her ex-husband Avit (Jacques Dutronc), for her affair with Patrice Doumbe (Doura Mane), an official in the new government. He in turn is ridiculed by his fellow cabinet ministers for stepping out with a white woman. The vilification escalates to such a point that Patrice is brutally murdered, and Laurence barely escapes the country alive, with the help of her ex-husband Avit. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Bernadette Lafont is as alluring as all get out in Such a Gorgeous Kid Like Me (original title: Une Belle Fille Comme Moi). She plays a crafty murderess who uses her not inconsiderable charms to disarm her victims and trap unwitting males into helping her. Lafont relates her steamy past to an ingenious criminology student, and in the end, he is as "hooked" as any of the other men in the women's life. Based on the novel by Henry Farrell (and more than a little inspired by such Hollywood "black widow" films as The File on Thelma Jordon), Such a Gorgeous Kid Like Me is one of the most consistently enjoyable of Francois Truffault's films of the 1970s. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
