Francesc Bellmunt Movies
Former cartoonist
Francisco Bellmunt entered Spanish cinema as a short filmmaker after co-founding Vértigo, a production company, with J.M. Minguella.
Bellmunt made his feature-length directorial debut with
Pastel de Sangre/Blood Cake/
Terror Among the Early Christians in 1971, following it with
Robin Hood Nunca Muere/
Robin Hood Never Dies in 1974. In 1975,
Bellmunt's career switched courses when he began making left-leaning politically oriented features and documentaries. In the late '70s,
Bellmunt changed genres again, specializing in ironic comedies such as
40 Años sin Sexo/40 Years Without Sex (1979). From 1985 to 1994,
Bellmunt served as the president of the Directors Guild of Catalonia. His other contributions include co-founding the Institut de Cinema Català and creating and running his own production company, Fair Play (established 1987). ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Amadeu (Sergi Mateu) is a popular nighttime disc jockey in this offbeat sex comedy. After a phone-sex call from the daughter of a German ambassador, she comes to the radio station for the real thing. Amadaeu's neighbor is an eccentric Hell's Angels biker who cracks up his beloved bike while making love to his girlfriend. Other listeners are two bakers and another neighbor who becomes sexually aroused with his nightly program. The feature is plagued by uneven English subtitles that contain many mistakes. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Throughout this low-brow semi-comedy, a group of Spanish military inductees regale each other with jokes, indulge in juvenile cameraderie, and generally pass the time away as only the energized young can, voluntarily locked up in a freight car on the train that is taking them to boot camp. While they are busy entertaining themselves in various ways, a fellow recruit who missed the train is chasing it (unsuccessfully) in a taxi, accompanied by his girlfriend. By the end of the train ride, after much commentary on military service and other relevant or not-so-relevant topics, the contrite recruits will have to emerge and face the music. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Unusual only because the dialogue is in Catalan, this otherwise run-of-the-mill drama is about a sex counsellor with his own sexual problems. He is chasing after a nurse while his wife is having an affair with someone else. To put it mildly, his marriage is not doing so well. Issues such as feminism, sex education, and ethical practices either in marriage or in counseling are not treated at length or in depth. There is some frontal nudity and simulated sex, though the film is not erotic or softcore. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

40 Years Without Sex, this non-narrative, skit-based satirical film's title in English, refers to the rather extreme moralism of the Franco era (1939-1976) in Spain during which, at least as far as public notice of it went, there was "no sex." In one episode, boys masturbate under the sheets while away at camp. In another, a woman is raped by a German sheep dog. In yet another, a particularly outspoken Falangist has a son who is unmistakably homosexual. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
