In general, one could say that Tel Aviv is where worldly Israelis go to play, and Jerusalem is where religious ones go to pray. In this tragic drama, the characters are all denizens of Tel Aviv's nightlife, and the action centers around an all-night bar owned by two women with difficult romantic relationships. The first owner is Dalia (Gila Almagor), who is the mistress of a film producer in ill health. The second owner is Leora (Irit Frank), whose policeman boyfriend Benny (Shuli Rand) can't stop tomcatting around. The bar is currently populated by the owners, some well-lubricated soldiers, Leora's boyfriend Frank, Riki (a mentally fragile woman who is "under doctor's orders" never to allow herself to be alone), a singer, some drug dealers, and the Arabs who work in the kitchen. Benny plays the hero at first by rescuing Riki (Avital Dicker) from the soldiers, but then he seduces her, with tragic results. More tragedy follows, as the crows of truth come home to roost. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This comedy about the "sanity" of those in an asylum focuses on popular Israeli comic Seffi Rivlin, who plays a bank manager who discovers that the inmates of a mental institution are running a counterfeiting operation from the basement of their hospital. Actors exaggerate their portrayals of the patients, and the plot zooms off in several directions at once. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this far-out, uneven comedy, two women exchange places and hope for the best. Irith Shor (Irith Alter) is married to a surgeon, has a son and daughter, and her life is so filled with a daily and weekly routine that she could easily go off the deep end. Irith Katz (Liora Grossman) is a successful lawyer with lots of men friends, and she moves in next door. Soon both Iriths, who each long for the life the other leads, decide to bite the bullet and switch identities. Of course, the husband involved will have to be consulted on this one, but nothing is going to stop their plans. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This fictional treatment of society in an Israeli high school examines young teens who may or may not be prepared to tackle the sexual challenges they now face. In one story, a 17-year old couple have been dating for some time, and when they make a dreaded visit to a gynecologist to find out if the young woman is pregnant, they receive a lecture by the doctor against abortion. In another story, a teen who has been using birth control pills and then takes them in the wrong way needs some instruction on what to do and how not to make mistakes with the pill. Along with these adult lessons, some notice is made of a high-school dropout who joins the army and then is sent to the front. This film is transparently instructional in its purpose, but then it does not propose to be anything else. As a result, some of the acting is also more academic than naturalistic. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
