Luis Alcoriza Movies

Spanish filmmaker and screenwriter Luis Alcoriza began in the film industry as a teenage actor in theatrical productions throughout Europe. He then went on to act in Mexican films until the late 1940s when he began screenwriting. In this capacity, Alcoriza is best known for his collaborations with famed director Luis Buñuel. Alcoriza became a director himself in the early 1960s, but his films, though popular in Mexico, have received little notice in international cinema. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This dreamy and somewhat improbable tale set in the Mexican countryside has been compared with the fantasy-laden social satires of (Luis Bunuel). Not coincidentally, the director of this film, Luis Alcoriza has worked with Bunuel. In the story, Candelario (Gonzalo Vega), a rugged unemployed man, calls on Don Lazaro (Ernesto Gomez Cruz) the owner of a farm estate, and asks for a place to stay in return for his labors. Extremely capable, before too long, he has been given responsibility for the management of the farm. The owner's wife Chabela (Marla Rojo), finds Candelario appealing, and they are soon embroiled in a romance. When the Don Lazaro attempts to put an end to this dalliance, he suffers an accident which diminishes his mental age to that of a child. The drifter has become the new patrone, and is accepted as such by all around him. This is not much to his liking, and before long he takes off again. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

A terrifying drama about a deranged killer on the loose set inside an apartment building, the story starts with a mild-mannered, part-time clarinetist for the local church. He has a hair fetish and has filled his closet with ponytails and braids from women who were sure his razor was the last thing they would see before having their throat slashed. In the same building a young wife is kept locked at home by a jealous husband who is convinced she could not remain faithful to him any other way. The moment she gets out (in hope of finding someone else), she comes across the clarinetist who has killed someone this time -- and she must run for her life. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The humor in this Mexican social comedy has more to do with the aptly depicted characters shown than with the story. When Enfermio (Manolo Faregas) takes his family on an outing, he encounters every possible calamity. A group of unconnected lotharios almost romance his wife and his daughter away from him, he encounters a military man who is a little too ready to draw his gun at the slightest provocation, and his mother manages to eat herself to death. This last event leads to a macabre drive through town, as he takes his family, including the propped-up corpse of his mother, back home. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The great screen surrealist Luis Buñuel co-wrote and directed this dark, bitterly witty satire. A group of people in formal dress arrives at an elegantly appointed home for a dinner party. However, once dinner is over and the guests retire to the drawing room, they discover that the servants have gone away, and for some reason they cannot leave. There is no explanation why -- there are no locked doors or barred windows preventing them from going home -- but the guests are convinced that they're stranded. Left to their own devices, they slowly but gradually degenerate into genteel savagery, taking an axe to a water pipe for drinking water, killing and eating a sheep that was to be part of the post-dinner entertainment, hiding the bodies of dead guests in the closet, dabbling in witchcraft, and burning the furniture. Buñuel's dry, quixotic wit is abundantly displayed in this film. Leading the cast was Silvia Pinal, the renowned actress who starred in several of Buñuel's Mexican films (she was married to noted producer Gustavo Alatriste, who produced several films with Buñuel). Other than the short subject Simon of the Desert, El Angel Exterminador proved to be Buñuel's last film made in his adopted homeland. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Julio Álemán stars in this fast-paced, often violent tragedy based on a true incident involving three young delinquents. The tale is directed byLuis Alcoriza, well known as a screenwriter for Luis Buñuel in films like Los Olvidados. Everything begins when two youths with nothing constructive on their minds decide to form a gang and go about terrorizing young couples. During one such episode, the female victim becomes attracted to the leader of the gang and so an odd, on-the-edge relationship begins. Now the group of three steal a car in Mexico City and take it joy-riding to Guadalajara where a suspicious used car salesman calls the police after they try to sell him the car. Desperate and with nowhere to turn, the trio have every reason to be frightened because the police have orders to shoot them on sight. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The celebrated Mexican comic Tin Tan steps outside of his usual slapstick in his portrayal of an eccentric millionaire in this comedy by director Gilberto Martínez-Solares. A singer with several albums to his credit, Tin Tan drops those talents here as well, making this an unusual effort that pays off in the end because of the credibility he achieves as the rich tycoon. The wealthy man comes across a woman in dire straits and nobly decides to help her out, hopefully giving lie to the title of this typical but effective Mexican comedy. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

With good character development and insights into human nature, this well-wrought drama is the first independently directed film by Luis Alcoriza who as a screenwriter, collaborated with Luis Buñuel. Set in a small village with strong local traditions, the story revolves around the dilemma of a devoted father whose son is in desperate need of medicine. The father is much too poor to buy the medicine himself, and so he goes against all his scruples and steals a pearl from the crown of a statue in the church. Unfortunately, he is caught but cannot come up with the pearl because it is lost. Rather than see the good man punished simply because he wanted to help his seriously ill son, the rest of the villagers clamor for his release, and for the priest's forgiveness. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Toro Negro is a standard drama by Spanish director Benito Alazraki about a big failure in a small arena -- a bullfighting arena, actually. When an aspiring toreador from a poor family decides he wants to go all the way with his training, his girlfriend and his buddies do their best to support and encourage him. At the same time, they have not really thought about issues like a true vocation or talent, and neither has he, in fact. The big day finally comes when he has to walk into a bull ring in a small town to face off with his first bovine challenge -- a day the bull will remember with a certain amount of satisfaction. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Based on a story by the late 19th and early 20th-century fantasy and horror writer Arthur Machen, this adapted tale plays upon the magical, "brujo" components of Latin American culture that resonate with Machen's favorite themes. An apparently decent but very suspicious Dr. Morales (Arturo de Cordova) is accused by the police of murdering his wife (Amparo Rivelles), characterized as a "demon in skirts." Was there some sort of dark side to Mrs. Morales? Is her husband a killer? Orthodox religion comes under a harsh scrutiny in this suspenseful tale of mystery and crime. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Recharging his creative batteries with a "commercial" venture, director Luis Bunuel came up with the stylish if undistinguished La Mort en ce Jardin (Death in This Garden). Set in a steaming jungle, the film concerns a disparate group of refugees from a despotic military regime. Among these worthies is "good time girl" Djin (Simone Signoret), ageing miner Castin (Charles Vanel) and deaf-mute Marie (Michele Girardon). The deeper the protagonists venture into the jungle, the more Bunuel's patented surrealism begins to surface. Only two of the escapees survive the ordeal, and they aren't necessary the two whom the viewers are rooting for. Some prints of La Mort en ce Jardin bear the title Gina. hel) F Lorsque L'Enfant Paris (When the Child Appears) was adapted from the hit play by Andre Roussin. The story revolves around the efforts of a well-meaning, highly moralistic minister, who wants the government to clamp down on illegitimacy. Complications ensue when the minister's own wife become pregnant--and all evidence indicates that the child is not his. Adding to the protagonist's headaches, his daughter, on the eve of her wedding to a wealthy young man, announces that she, too, may well be in the family way. Not to be left out, the minister's son declares that he thinks he's impregnated his father's secretary! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
