This made-for-TV movie, one of a series that brought back James Arness in the role of Marshall Matt Dillon from the long-running TV Western serial Gunsmoke, finds Dillon on the trail of an angry young man whose mother was killed during a robbery of a stagecoach. The boy has sworn vengeance against the men who murdered his mother, but Dillon is determined to see the bandits brought to trial -- and to prevent the headstrong young man from being killed by the bloodthirsty gunmen. As Dillon hits the trail, he's joined by a stranger named David Healy (Bruce Boxleitner), whose eagerness to help doesn't quite disguise the fact that he has a secret agenda of his own. But before negotiations can begin, Isogi is murdered. Witnessing the tragedy, Talia suddenly experiences a telepathic mindflash which may or may not reveal a widespread conspiracy. In Kuffs, Christian Slater plays George Kuffs, an irresponsible 21-year-old who walks out on his pregnant girlfriend Maya (Milla Jovovich) and runs, broke, to see his big brother Brad (Bruce Boxleitner) in San Francisco. Bruce is the owner of a Special Patrol, a franchised civilian auxiliary police force. During George's visit, Bruce is killed, and George, who witnessed the killing, takes over the patrol to seek revenge. But first George has to earn respect from the patrol, and at first all of them want him out. But with the help of a police liaison (Tony Goldwyn), he uncovers an illicit scheme involving $50 million, a case Bruce was just about to break when he was killed. John Goodman is cast as the Sultan of Swat, whose excesses -- especially drinking -- and private demons can (in this context) be excused in view of his genuine love of baseball. The facts never get in the way of a good story for screenwriter John Fusco; we're even offered the umpteenth rehash of "Little Johnny", the largely fanciful tale of the invalid boy who promises to get well if Babe hits him a homer (as in Pride of the Yankees, the cured Johnny makes return a appearance as grownup). The most amusing fabrication is the casting of narrow James Cromwell as the Babe's orphanage mentor Brother Mathias, who in real life weighed 300 pounds. Many of the characters are composites, notably Bruce Boxleitner's Jumpin' Joe Dugan. At least Ruth's two wives--Trini Alvarado as Helen, who suffers Babe's many peccadilloes and dies under strange circumstances, and Kelly McGillis as Claire, who keeps Babe on a very short leash-are depicted with a modicum of accuracy. The baseball sequences are well handled (though there could have been less slo-mo) while Elmer Bernstein's charmingly old-fashioned musical score is right in tune with the film's approach to its subject. This made-for-cable-TV film focuses on a police detective (Bruce Boxleitner) bored by life in the missing-persons bureau. While on the trail of a missing mother, however, he gradually realizes that the clues lead to a gruesome serial killer.
