For over thirty years, AC/DC have been rocking audiences around the world with their tough, swaggering no-frills brand of blues-based hard rock. The secret of AC/DC's success has been the consistent strength of their live show, and AC/DC: Plug Me In is a two-DVD set that features highlights from twenty television broadcasts and concerts captured on film or video, ranging from a 1975 performance on an Australian awards show (the group's first television appearance) to three songs from a raucous concert before over 400,000 Toronto fans in 2003. The set also includes rare footage of AC/DC playing a concert at an Aussie high school in 1976, and a bonus clip of guitarists Angus Young and Malcolm Young sitting in with the Rolling Stones in 2003. Songs include "You Shook Me All Night Long", "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap", "Highway To Hell", "Rock 'n' Roll Damnation", "The Jack" and many, many more. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Based on a best-selling autobiography, this comedy drama is the surprisingly sweet-natured life story of a controversial radio personality. Howard Stern, who stars as himself, is a nerdy New York kid who dreams of a disc jockey career despite being a self-loathing klutz who lacks a traditional broadcaster's voice. A strikeout artist in college, Stern's romantic travails end when he meets and marries Alison (Mary McCormack), a beautiful social worker. Stern's early career at several radio stations is undistinguished. Bored, he makes his life the centerpiece of his show, including his obsessions with sex and bathroom humor, and he finds willing cohorts in news reporter Robin Quivers and producer Fred Norris. After an abortive tenure at a Washington D.C. station that loathes his high-rated antics, he lands at NBC in New York. Again, Stern clashes regularly with executives, especially Kenny "Pig Vomit" Rushton (Paul Giamatti), who runs roughshod over Stern's team. At home, Stern's tendency to discuss the intimate details of his marriage takes a toll, reaching a meltdown when he jokes about Alison's recent miscarriage on-air. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

In September 1991, only a few days after an attempted military coup failed to restore Communism to the newly democratic Russia and its affiliated nations, 500,000 rock music fans converged in Moscow to enjoy the first open-air rock festival to be held in the former Soviet Union. For Those About to Rock: Monsters in Moscow features performances from AC/DC, Metallica, the Black Crowes, and Pantera; along with the music, the video also offers a look at the efforts by the Russian army to postpone the concert, as well as the violent behavior of some of the soldiers assigned to act as security. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Writer-director Stephen King falls short in his debut at the helm with Maximum Overdrive, an absurd tale about a radiation storm that somehow animates machines across the world, causing them to turn on their makers. The film focuses on a group of survivors held captive at the Dixie Boy Diner by a group of bad-tempered semis. Led by Emilio Estevez, the diner-goers do their impression of Ten Little Indians, waiting their turn until each gets bumped off one by one. There are holes in the plot big enough for the semis to drive through; for example, why don't the trucks run over the diner at the start of the film rather than wait for ninety minutes? Maximum Overdrive's only distinction is that it is, without question, one of the worst films released in the '80s. ~ Jeremy Beday, All Movie Guide

High voltage rock and roll band AC/DC appear live on stage in this French documentary. A 1979 Paris concert during the Australian heavy metal band's "Highway To Hell" tour showcases the power and precision that the quintet bring to vicious rockers like "Whole Lotta Rosie," "Shot Down In Flames," "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be" and the epic parable "Let There Be Rock." Pixieish lead guitarist Angus Young, attired in his trademark school-boy's uniform, takes center stage with his energetic antics and frenetic solos, while the rest of the band crank out their minimalist boogie with quiet determination. Interview segments and humorous backstage footage show another side to the thuggish musicians, especially AC/DC's flamboyant lead singer Bon Scott, who died two months after this filmed concert. Fans of the highly influential heavy rock group will want to seek out AC/DC: Let There Be Rock for a glimpse of the band performing at the peak of their powers and teetering on the brink of worldwide stardom. ~ Fred Beldin, All Movie Guide

This is the third children's feature to appear in 1981 from director Dieter Koester with the assistance of his wife, Hannelore Conradsen-Koester, and unlike the other two features, this story was made for television. A group of youngsters in their pre-teen years are thrown together simply by the fact that they live in the same neighborhood in West Berlin, unique in that it is surrounded by the Berlin Wall on three sides. All the kids in the group are from working-class families struggling to keep their heads above water -- and so the art of survival is definitely passed on from parent to child. In spite of the economic hardships they share, one has been able to get a Super-8 film camera and starts to shoot interesting neighborhood scenes, from the local subway station to graffiti on the Wall. This and other activities often get them into trouble, though most of the trouble consists of being chased and not getting caught by people like customs guards, conductors on the subway, and similar authority figures. Their antics stand in high relief against the Wall erected by their elders, a divider that is taken as a part of the landscape like everything else. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

While they were a few years away from international superstardom, in 1977 AC/DC were already one of the world's great hard rock bands, playing with a streamlined force and sweaty passion than connected like a kick in the teeth without any of the posing or gimmicks which would befall many of their heavy metal brethren. Rock Masters: AC/DC preserves a show videotaped by the BBC in 1977 at London's Hippodrome Theater, which features original vocalist Bon Scott three years before his untimely death. Songs include "Whole Lotta Rosie," "Let There Be Rock," and many more. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
