Dilemmas of life, love and family are the subject of this multiple-narrative drama from Italy. The adopted son (played by Francesco Stella) of a well-known philanthropist, Don Tommaso (Toni Bertorelli), wants to travel to his native Morocco to attend his sister's wedding, but he must first hurdle the barricades of Italy's immigration laws. Meanwhile, Tommaso's maid Lucia (Elena Russo) has to deal with her black-sheep brother, who joined a theater troupe comprised of unemployed actors, only to quit to take part in a poorly organized bank robbery. If that weren't enough, Lucia is reunited with a boy who once loved her (Elilio Solfrizzi), who has returned to Italy after failing to make his fortune in the United States. Fine photography and a warm, human charm highlight this film, which was screened at the 1999 Roma Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Ulisse is a conductor on board a train running from Sicily to Milan and back during the 1960s. Every day, as the engines clatter over the rails he observes a wide variety of human dramas unfold. This sentimental and ultimately bitter Italian drama chronicles several such mini-dramas using them to comment upon the sad state of modern Italy. In one episode, a Sicilian woman who is moving northward with her family must choose between two disparate suitors. In another, a businessman attempts to conceal the presence of his mistress from his son. In another, a heart-broken nurse finds brief, passionate solace in the arms of a novelist. Meanwhile Ulisse looks out the window and in one scene sees a train heading back for Sicily. On board are many of the passengers he now attends, but they have all aged 20 years. None have fared well, including Ulisse, and this is meant to mirror Italy's own decline. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This unique Italian pseudo-documentary deftly blends fact with fiction in its portrait of stage, screen, and television actor Alessandro Haber (a.k.a. Antonio Hutter). Haber, considered one of Italy's finest comic actors, has worked with some of the greatest Italian directors of all time including, Bertolucci, Mastroianni, Michele Placido, and Nanni Loy. Film clips and interviews are interspliced throughout the film and the line between the truth and the story behind the comic actor's life is delightfully blurred. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This 1991 Italian period drama is not to be confused with the 1990 Australian vampire film with the same English-language title, Wicked. The entire story, a genuine psychological detective tale, concerns the attempt by a young doctor (Julian Sands) working early in the 20th century in a Swiss clinic to uncover the root cause for the persistent mental breakdown of a young woman (Giuliana De Sio) who has recently suffered the death of her daughter. Despite the resistance of the clinic's administration to his use of Freudian methods, the doctor begins his analysis at the clinic but finds that he must travel to Italy to interview the woman's family and friends in order to get at the ultimate cause. A version of this film capably dubbed into English was released at the same time as its Italian-language version. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In one popular Spanish-English dictionary, "picaro" is defined as "roguish; scheming, tricky; low, vile; mischievous," and when used as a noun it refers to a rogue, a schemer. Yet the word also harkens to the kinds of novels (picaresque) that came out of Spain in the 17th century, including Don Quixote, stories that recounted the wanderings of vagabonds of one kind or another. This film by the esteemed director Mario Monicelli is set in the 17th century and concerns the picaresque adventures of two amusing "picaros." Lazarillo and Guzman (Enrico Montesano and Giancarlo Giannini) first met when they were slaves rowing on a prison-galley ship, and they strike up a friendship based on their having endured similarly horrific childhoods. While escaping from the slave ship during a mutiny (they chose the wrong side) they narrowly escape drowning and are separated. Guzman becomes an impoverished Baron's (Vittorio Gassman) personal servant and puts his thieving ways to good use in that capacity, while Lazarillo joins an acting troupe. When they meet again, they immediately decide to pull off a con-job they call "the cannoli trick." ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In many ways, this was a courageous film to make about Carlo Dalla Chiesa (played by Lino Ventura), an Italian general who gave his life trying to eliminate Mafia bosses and their supporters. Dalla Chiesa's wife was also murdered when her husband got too close to exposing the truth about the connections between the Mafia, the state, and the banking world. After Dalla Chiesa organized a campaign against the Red Brigades, he was sent to Sicily to clamp down on Mafia activities and bring some of the worst mob leaders to justice. His wife Emmanuela completely supported him in this dangerous undertaking, and during the course of his investigations, Dalla Chiesa began to check out the banks suspected in laundering money for the mob. That level of inquiry brought him a warning phone call from a government minister, and when he refused to stop his three-month investigation, he and his wife were murdered. In an eloquent statement of support for his efforts to combat the Mafia, a long list of sponsors for this film - including local organizations both inside and outside the government, anti-drug groups, and organizations in the cinematic field among many others, were listed in the closing credits. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Based on a real-life mystery in the newspapers after World War I, this conventional, straightforward story is about a poorly-dressed man who is brought into the police station in Turin for stealing flower pots from the cemetery. He is rather brutally interrogated, and then because he has no idea who he is or where he belongs, he is put into an asylum for the mentally disturbed. After his photograph is published in the newspapers, a woman shows up at the institution claiming that he is Professor Canella, her missing and wealthy husband. The news obtains the release of the amnesiac, but his claim is quickly and hotly contested by another family, arguing that the man is an imposter. As a result, his case goes back to court and in the meantime, the "professor" is put in jail. As the courtroom drama continues, there are various clues that suggest whether or not the amnesiac has been accurately identified and by whom. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Originally a six-hour mini-series, Cuore lost four hours after being cut down to this sentimental feature-length film on life before the turn of the 20th century. Four soldiers meet in the army and reminisce about their childhoods in a bygone era, and these are the scenes that unfold for the majority of the next two hours. The men have been privileged to have had good teachers in school, and while their home lives differed and in some cases were difficult, nothing really stopped them from going on to a well-adjusted adult life. As 19th-century attitudes are painted in clear strokes, viewers may still wonder if life was quite as ideal as these vignettes would indicate. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Intended as a kind of satire on a certain type of social-climbing mania, this routine comedy misses like a faulty engine. The drunken father (Philippe Noiret) of a typical, undistinguished middle-class family in Nantes is certain that he could have been -- should have been -- a great novelist. That conviction is paired with another, that his untalented son -- obvious to everyone but the family -- should be given the praise and emoluments that he deserves. When the aspiring pianist's teachers fail to bring out the genius hidden away somewhere inside his mediocrity, they meet a quick and watery end in the nearest river. The good but dull-witted commissioner of police is trying to figure out the identity of the serial killer fixated on piano teachers. Given that his talents match those of father and son, the dull-witted duo seem to be in no imminent danger of arrest. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
