The situation in Poland in December 1981 was nearing the boiling point. It had gotten so bad that nearly empty supermarkets were being swarmed by customers eager to pluck the last remaining items off the shelves. And passengers on a seagoing excursion were preparing to defect when the ship reached Hamburg. Indeed, when martial law is declared in Poland and the ship's captain declares his intention to return to that country without stopping anywhere else, the majority of the passengers don life jackets and jump overboard rather than return to the oppressions they hoped to escape. This drama focuses on the morality of two female friends. When a woman who supervises production at a garment factory realizes that an award will be intentionally given to the wrong person, she objects vociferously. Standing up with her is her close friend, even though the friend is speaking out against an injustice perpetrated by her own lover. Ten years down the line, the former supervisor is now a mayor and is not exactly living up to the ethical standards that she set in the factory. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 1976 Polish Film Festival, this drama from director Andrzej Wajda was based on the short story The Shadow Line by Joseph Conrad. The film tells the story of a young man who tries his best to helm a foundering boat bound for Singapore. Not only is the boat itself in rough shape, but many of the passengers are suffering from a highly contagious disease.
