Tina Yothers Movies
Tina Yothers rose to child stardom as Jennifer, the second-oldest child of the Keaton family, on
Gary David Goldberg's quintessential '80s sitcom
Family Ties (opposite
Michael J. Fox,
Meredith Baxter-Birney, and others). An actress from age three, born into a showbusiness family,
Yothers signed one of her first major parts in 1981, shortly before the seven-year
Family Ties assignment, when
Alan Parker and co. tapped her to play the daughter of
Albert Finney and
Diane Keaton in his gut-wrenching treatment of a contemporary divorce,
Shoot the Moon (1982).
Yothers' post-
Ties career placed its strongest emphasis on telemovies, such as
Laker Girls (1990) and
A Perry Mason Mystery: The Case of the Jealous Jokester (1995), and she achieved a colorful bit of recognition by playing scandal queen
Tonya Harding in the TV movie Spunk: The Tonya Harding Story (1993). Though she would make a smattering of guest appearances on various TV shows, she didn't return to the screen in any regular capacity until she signed on for the fourth season of Celebrity Fit Club.

Laker Girls adheres slavishly to the formula established by those "Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders" TV movies of a decade or so ago. We follow the progress of three aspirants (Tina Yothers, Paris Vaughn and Alexandra Paul) for the cheerleading squad of the Los Angeles Lakers. There's the standard "den mother" character (Jean Simmons), and lots of prattle about the dedication and responsibility required of each new Laker Girl. And of course, there's plenty of jiggle, which is why most of you tuned in anyway. Shari Shattuck costars as a Laker cheerleader who wants to use this job as the stepping stone for a superstar career--which actually did happen to ex-Laker Girl Paula Abdul, a fact driven home at every possible opportunity by the ad campaign for this 1990 TV movie. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

All the main characters from the popular TV sitcom Family Ties were carried over into this made-for-TV feature. Michael J. Fox heads the cast as insufferable/lovable young conservative Alex Keaton, who this time around is attending Oxford on a summer scholarship. The Keaton family--ex-hippie parents Elyse (Meredith Baxter Birney) and Steven (Michael Gross), and sisters Mallory (Justine Bateman) and Jennifer (Tina Yothers)--decide to go along with Alex in order to enjoy a vacation in England. The script contrives to have the Keatons behave wildly out of character by getting involved in a hackneyed espionage plot. The film looks more like one of those Dell Comics "specials" or Ace Paperback TV show tie-ins rather than a logical extension of the original series. Family Ties Vacation was first telecast September 23, 1985. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Director Alan Parker and writer Bo Goldman chronicle the emotional disintegration of an unhappy marriage. Albert Finney and Diane Keaton play George and Faith Dunlap, a seemingly happily married couple living with their four daughters in a converted farmhouse in Marin County, California. George is inwardly empty and decides to have an affair with Sandy (Karen Allen), who has doubts about how long their affair will last. Faith is also suffering from ennui and takes up with Frank Henderson (Peter Weller), the contractor for the Dunlap's tennis court. Frank, after discovering about Faith's affair, is in a confused state: he wants to leave and live with Sandy but doesn't want his wife to date other men and demands the love of his daughters -- all of whom now detest him. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi
