The always reliable Griffith Jones is afforded the leading role in the British Account Rendered. Jones plays a victim of circumstance, accused of murdering his wife Ursula Howells. With the police breathing down his neck, Jones endeavors to prove his innocence. He is aided in this effort by the lovely Honor Blackman ("Pussy Galore" in Goldfinger and the first female star of the long-running TVer The Avengers). Alistair Sim plays a mild, innocuous little watchmaker who spends his off-hours as a professional assassin. His present target is windbag cabinet member Raymond Huntley. After various misfire attempts, Sim plants a bomb in a small radio and waits for the tube to warm up--but the authorities by now are on to him. The Green Man has some excellent setpieces, notably a droll snatch of black humor involving a body stuffed in a piano. The film's only debit is that, in the play upon which it is based, Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat's Meet the Body, Sim's character is secondary, almost peripheral. By reshaping the film into a star vehicle, much of the play's intimate (albeit ghoulish) charm is dissipated. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this crime drama, a sneaky race-car driver wants to kill his wife the heiress. Unfortunately her attorney, who is in love with her, discovers the plan. The driver poisons the lawyer and then tells him all about his elaborate plan to kill them both. In this suspenseful mystery, a woman is imprisoned for murdering her husband. All that knew him are sympathetic to the woman. When her cousin learns of her incarceration, he abruptly ends his vacation to begin investigating the death. He is assisted by the woman's stepdaughter; together they reveal that the husband had been an extortionist and that there are a myriad of suspects. During the Irish "troubles", an IRA gunman (John Mills) wearies of the constant violence. He begins to preach a philosophy of peaceful persuasion, and refuses direct orders to blow up a London railway station. The gunman's impatient brother (Dirk Bogarde) find his sibling's new approach to be counterproductive to the movement. The rest of the IRA agrees, and soon the gentle gunman is branded a traitor and a price is placed on his head. Set in a quiet British village, Franchise Affair details the ramifications of a malicious lie. Though the authorities swallow Ketty's story, village lawyer Robert Blair (Michael Dennison) had his doubts. Lonely orphan girl Joan Dowling is killed while trying to help her fellow passenger, duplicitous German POW Laurence Payne, escape.
