Filmmakers Frédéric and Samuel Guillaume team to direct this charming tale of a 15-year-old who sets out to find his long-lost father and instead stumbles into the adventure of a lifetime. Max's father was a famous troubadour named Johnny Bigoude who disappeared shortly after his boy was born. Now Max is a teenager who is known to the locals as something of a busker himself, and he's determined to find out what became of his old man. When Max hears word that Johnny is planning an underground gig in the small town of Hilaire, he hits the road and hopes for the best. Upon arriving in the town, Max quickly realizes that Saint-Hilaire is in fact a company town that seems to have been virtually monopolized by Bzzz & Co. -- a popular manufacturer of fly swatters. The manager in charge of operations is the indolent Rodolfo. Though initially hesitant to work for such a shiftless lout, Max soon meets the pretty Felice and decides to sign on with Bzzz & Co. anyway. Soon enough, however, Rodolfo's incompetence catches up with him and the shareholders make the drastic decision to fire half of the workers and bring in a stringent new management team. When a series of subsequent calamities send the townspeople into an uproar, it's up to Max and Felice to get to the bottom of the mystery and restore order in Hilaire. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Roman and Lulu have been very happy together, and while there are no outward flaws in their relationship, Roman can't shake the feeling that Lulu would be better off spending her life with someone her own age. When Lulu lands a movie role in America, she begins packing her bags for a trip to California, but the weekend before she leaves, Roman decides to tell her that it's time they parted ways -- a decision she hardly agrees with. Le Roman do Lulu was directed by Pierre-Olivier Scotto, who also appears in a supporting role as a publisher. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The chronicle of a young Kurdish couple's journey from Kurdistan to Paris, Passeurs de Reves opens with longtime sweethearts Dolovan (Olivier Sitruk) and Zara (Rosanna Vite Mesropian) fleeing from their Mesopotamian village, which has been ravaged by ethnic warfare. As they make their way across the frigid Caucasian Mountains, Zara's parents, who are traveling with the couple, succumb to the elements. Dolovan and Zara eventually make it to a run-down evacuee camp presided over by a friendly Kurdish "tsar," where Zara discovers that her deceased father's suitcase is filled with cash. Although this is ostensibly good news, the cash makes the couple vulnerable to smugglers, dodgy guides, and counterfeiters, all of whom are eager to take advantage of Dolovan and Zara's newfound wealth. To further complicate matters, although they have money, the couple lack necessary visas to continue their journey, and soon Dolovan is taken away by the police. Abandoned in the Ukraine, Zara is robbed and then disappears, while Dolovan, traveling solo, eventually makes it to Paris to reunite with his love. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Arthur Joffe directed this French comic fantasy, in French and English dialogue, about God (voice of Pierre Arditi), invisible and spinning through Heavenly space on an asteroid, along with his sidekick angel Rene (Ticky Holgado). God observes Earthly events on His television set. After hacking out a screenplay on the Hebrew keyboard of a manual typewriter, the Deity needs a director, lands as a burning bush in back of the Hollywood sign, finds Hollywood hostile, jumps to Paris, and travels from one body to another, eventually settling on tekkie Jeanne (Helene de Fougerolles), an employee at Harper Audiovisual. Faxes in Hebrew begin arriving, and Jeanne hears voices. With God's screenplay translated to French, it finally goes up to the 127th floor for an okay by Mr. Harper himself (Tcheky Karyo). But there's a problem -- God is not very happy about Mr. Harper's alterations, as he explains, "I wrote the Bible, the best-selling book of all time! Where do they get off editing my script?" ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

This sumptuous French drama offers episodes from the notorious life of 18th century socialite and playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. The story begins in the 1770s with a rehearsal of his "The Barber of Seville." Young friend of Voltaire, Philipp Gudin introduces himself to the great playwright and offers to become his personal secretary. He then becomes the adventurous Beaumarchais' keeper as the author gets involved in a variety of situations including a duel with an angry husband, his battle with the corrupt French government and a serious long-term affair with Marie-Theres de Willer. It all comes to a climax when King Louis XV assigns the playwright a secret mission to London. There he must find and retrieve a damning document from transvestite aristocrat Chevalier D'Eon. Unfortunately, Beaumarchais gets tangled up with supporting American rebels and ends up tossed in jail. Louis XVI sees that he is finally released and then the writer becomes an arms smuggler for American revolutionaries. All of his activities bankrupt him and so Beaumarchais must return to writing plays. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Filled with references and language that will be most meaningful to those intimate with the French language and culture, this gritty outing attempts to paint a dignified but funny portrait of a poor, dysfunctional family during the winter of 1968. The Jacobs currently reside in a grim industrial junkyard on the outskirts of Paris. Jesus is a bit of a hippy with his long hair, loud, hip clothing and wild man ways. His father is an alcoholic and his mother is utterly passive. His brother Nene fancies himself a '50s-style greaser. Only his stepsister Marie, an early women's libber shows the slightest inclination toward work. Were it not for her income, the family would be destitute. Jesus' brother Ernest is the family star because he earned a scholarship to a university in Paris. Jesus and Nene frequently drink at the grungy Elvis bar with their sex-crazy, paraplegiac friend Levrette. Conflicts arise when Jesus falls for the free-spirited supermarket cashier Mathilde, the sister of the insanely jealous Gerard. He and Jesus immediately become bitter rivals, something that earns the contempt of Mathilde. But the real trouble doesn't begin until someone savagely rapes Marie. Afterwards, Jesus and Nene team up to get revenge. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The conversations of an ill-suited couple who came together through personal ads form the framework of this French film that is comprised of a series of five strange, outworldly tales. The first tale, "Burning Revenge," tells of a man who pours gasoline over a service station in the dead of night and then uses a lit cigarette to threaten the attendant. The second, "Panic FM," follows a pizza delivery boy on his bicycle. While on his route, he is listening to a gory radio show and keeps encountering scary ghosts. "Dead End" depicts a couple who experience the same accident over and over while cruising down a country road. The fourth vignette "Sado's Blues" takes a darkly comedic turn as it chronicles the tale of a masochistic woman who invites a timid fellow up to her apartment and demands that he use her "toys" while having sex with her. The final tale "Happy Birthday" follows a wife and lover as they kill the husband using a diving outfit and a forest fire. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The potentially negative effects of using archaic and strict methods of dealing the children the main theme of this French film which is set in 1962. While it's story of two youngsters in love, it also explores romance and sexuality in children. It is told from their viewpoint. Gil and Jessica are two eccentric and imaginative children in love. Worried that their love is unhealthy, the surrounding adults subject the kids to two differing approaches to modify their "unnatural behavior." Dr. Nevele offers the traditional, stern methodology. Edouart offers a more permissive approach. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This experimental drama is something of an actor's challenge: see if you can convincingly play an age range from six to thirty six without any makeup or costume changes, just by using your gifts as a performer. In this film, the role of Victorine poses just such a challenge to Anouk Grinberg, who appears as this child of the Marseilles slums. At any moment in the film, she is likely to be any age. The young girl cowering at her mother's feet becomes a sexual wunderkind, as well as observing the bizarre and often sexual antics of her multiracial neighbors. If there is one theme for the movie beyond Victorine's odd life, it is that everyone needs affection and support. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The Italians have bocce ball, and the French have a similar game, boules. This is played (generally in the southern part of the country) with steel balls on a packed-earth court. In this sports/crime thriller, a young man whose father was killed for violating the unspoken roles of the game in professional competition trains with his grandfather to become a champion boules player just like his father. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Simon and Dede are best friends: two aimless drunks who spend their days getting sloshed and any other available time getting laid. Simon is living on unemployment benefits in a trailer parked near his sister's apartment. Dede works at a fish-packing plant on the night shift. Neither man is sensitive, young, or good looking. However, their sang-froid (literally, "cold blood," referring to a quality of imperturbability) stands them in good stead as they go about their seedy lives, picking up one woman and having sex with her on the beach, or when Simon calmly has sex with a prostitute in front of the woman's brother. In the past, a bizarre necrophiliac situation led to Simon experiencing his only sense of what it might be to truly love someone. This unedifying tale is based on stories by the American writer Charles Bukowski, whose melancholy works have provided endless inspiration for European filmmakers. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Life is a Long Quiet River is the satirically philosophical title for this French domestic comedy. Borrowing a page from The Corsican Brothers, the film begins with a castoff mistress spitefully switching a pair of newborn babies at the maternity ward managed by her doctor lover. As a result, the daughter (Valerie Lalande) of a family of tramps and thieves is raised in a comfy bourgeois household, while the lowlife family ends up with the middle-class family's offspring (Benoit Magimel). Twelve years after the fact, the discarded mistress confesses to her misdeed. The mistress' ex-lover, doctor Daniel Gelin, tries to set things right, with hilariously disastrous consequences. Director Etie Chatiliez had received his training in French TV commercials, so it's not surprising that Life is a Long Quiet River is a string of anecdotes and punchlines. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this drama set in the south of France during World War II, the realities of war lose out to a melodramatic rendering of the fortunes of Lise, a gorgeous German Jewess (Barbara Rudnik). Lise escapes certain death in Nazi Germany by making her way to the south of France, only to be threatened once again when the Nazis occupy the area in 1942. Her manager sets her up in a small town where her accent, clothes and mannerisms cause the townspeople to suspect she's a German spy. If only she were aware enough not to leave little clues indicating who she is, and if she hadn't had that affair with a teen-ager, and if she would not say no to the wrong lover, maybe her future would look a little less grim. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
