A mysterious, mind-altering epidemic has infected humankind, and when a Washington, D.C. psychiatrist discovers that the outbreak seems to be extraterrestrial in origin, she struggles to save her son from infection in this sci-fi thriller starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, and directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Das Experiment). The space shuttle has crashed, and investigators assigned to explore the wreckage have found something unimaginable in the debris -- something from the deepest reaches of outer space. Everyone who comes into contact with it soon begins to transform in ways that can't be explained by modern science. While their physical appearance remains completely unaltered, their emotions seem to be drained and their actions become strangely inhuman. The only people who know the truth about this extraterrestrial epidemic are Washington, D.C. psychiatrist Carol Bennell (Kidman) and her longtime friend Dr. Ben Driscoll (Craig). It seems that the alien virus attacks people in their sleep, and by the time they awaken, the transformation has already taken place. The contagion is spreading rapidly, and as more people fall victim to its eerie effects by the hour, it becomes impossible to differentiate the infected from those who can still be trusted. When Carol realizes that her young son may hold the only hope for saving the human race, she struggles to remain awake long enough to find the boy and prevent planet Earth from becoming host to a terrifying new breed of extraterrestrials. Mistaken identity leads a man into a race against the law in this action thriller. Jed Griffin (Michael Madsen) is traveling through Vermont in a motor home with his wife and family when they happen upon Rudy Wicker (Jeff Wincott). Wicker is a desperate criminal whose attempt to rob a bank left several customers dead, including the wife of the town sheriff; now he's on the run from the police, and when Rudy sees Jed and his RV, he steals the vehicle with Jed's family still inside, and shoots Jed to keep him out of the way. Jed was not killed by Rudy's bullet, just wounded, but now the police believe he's the man they're looking for, so Jed has to find a way to prove his innocence while tracking down his camper to save his family from Rudy. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Jaded, hard-drinking, burned-out Det. John Rourke (James Russo) finds himself the target of a Los Angeles gang of Asians when he begins investigating mobster Yang (Francois Chan) and his connection to a violent, deadly attack on police during what should have been a secret meeting. But it's only a staged death, and Mario is told to hide Rocco at the funeral home. Mario takes an interest in Rocco's wife Maria (Kari Wuhrer). Rocco can't keep away from Mario's girlfriend Louise (Holly Gagnier). Maria goes into a murderous rage when she discovers Rocco has been cheating on her. In this martial arts film, the quiet, peaceful life of a college professor changes dramatically after young thugs stab his pregnant wife and she loses their baby. Later a villainous promoter of extreme fighting (a sporting event in which a bout ends only with the death of an opponent) illegally broadcasts these fights. A luckless kickboxing alcoholic gambler's obsession causes him to use his girl friend as a stake in his latest bet--that he can beat a kickboxing mobster, famous for fixing Vegas matches. He loses, but lacks the nerve to tell her about it and instead continues to make plans to move to Colorado with her. Unfortunately, she finds out and, to get even, moves in with the crook who won her. Meanwhile, the boxer makes another bad bet and ends up working for a vicious loan shark to pay off his resulting debt. He also begins drinking so heavily that he cannot function. He hits bottom soon enough, but then decides to turn his life around and enter a kickboxing tourney with a half-million-dollar prize. Martial Law is a no-brainer action flick starring Steven McQueen, the son of the late, great Steve McQueen. Buddy cop duo Sean Thompson and Billie Black are on the trail of a killer whose signature weapon is a punch that stops the heart. The bad guy, played by David Carradine, also runs a number of illicit businesses, including trafficking in drugs. Things get personal when Sean realizes his little brother has fallen under the killer's sway, and hot when Sean realizes the feisty Billie might be falling for him. The film runs a predictable course as the two close in on the killer, rescue the little brother, defeat the evil henchmen, and finally capture the bad guy. Its formulaic story aside, Martial Law is an interesting film for its blending of the early-'90s hysteria around serial killers with the equally prevalent hysteria around gangs and urban youth. ~ Brian Whitener, Rovi

To fully appreciate Boy in Blue, it's helpful to know a little bit about the sport of "sculling"-or competitive rowing. Nicolas Cage stars as the real-life Ned Hanlan, who at the turn of the century was Canada's foremost sculling champ. A wild, uncontrollable youth, Hanlan is "adopted" by a gambler named Bill (David Naughton), who promotes the boy on the sculling circuit for his own monetary gain. Ruthlessly businessman Knox (Christopher Plummer) assumes control of Hanlan's career, but when Ned discovers just how ruthless Knox can be, he casts his lot with the first honest man he's met, inventor-speculator Walter (Sean Sullivan). Hanlan's professional success is capped by his marriage to Margaret (Cynthia Dale), Knox's previously unattainable niece. The by-the-numbers Boy in Blue was given an R rating due to a few disposable sex scenes, thereby cutting its potential audience (hero-worshipping youths) in half. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
