Irwin Allen, praised in some circles as a science fiction genius and damned in others as a shameless schlockmeister, produced and directed this fanciful TV-movie. Set in the 21st century, the film concentrates on a group of colonists dwelling in a modernistic underwater city called Pacifica. The emphasis is on drama rather than special effects, as we see the deep-sea denizens struggling to cope with the pressures of their new existence--and their own personal animosities. Stuart Whitman heads a large cast of TV veterans, including Time Tunnel regulars James Darren, Robert Colbert and Whit Bissell, and onetime Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea star Richard Basehart (as the US President). Expanded from a short "demo" pilot film, City Beneath the Sea is the one Irwin Allen project that could have matured into a truly worthwhile TV series; unfortunately no network was interested in subsidizing this expensive effort. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The man with the "life wish" is multi-billionaire Burl Ives, who maintains an isolated medical research center. Stuart Whitman is hired as the new head of this center, where he is told to ignore any unusual goings-on and to keep his mouth shut. Slowly it dawns on Whitman that there's an inordinate number of wealthy old men entering the center--and the research lab is busy dissecting younger cadavers. Without revealing any more of the plot, we can point out that the film's closing line refers to Chinese leader Mao Tse-Tung, who was 80 years old at the time. The original title of Man Who Wanted to Live Forever was The Heart Farm, which would have given the game away from the outset. This TV movie was released theatrically in Europe as The Only Way Out is Dead, which likewise lowered the film's element of surprise. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Whitman exerts his influence to cover up his crime, and the official verdict is suicide. But Whitman has not reckoned with the "Hell hath no fury" intensity of his cast-aside mistress Janet Leigh. Stranded in the African wilds by a plane crash, a disparate group of passengers' worst enemy isn't weather or wild animals but a fellow traveler. A delayed flight causes several South African travelers to charter a small plane from unctuous pilot Sturdevan (Nigel Davenport). Among the group: Dr. Bondrachai (Theodore Bikel), divorcee Grace Munkton (Susannah York), the crooked Brian O'Brien (Stuart Whitman), the elderly German Grimmelman (Harry Andrews), and mining engineer Mike Bain (Stanley Baker). O'Brien bribes Sturdevan to reroute the flight, so when the plane is brought down in the vast Kalahari by an encounter with a cloud of locusts, no rescue can be expected. A struggle for control begins. After Studevan attacks Grace sexually, he is exiled, and Brian takes over. He attempts to banish Bondrachai and Grimmelman, but the latter objects, and Brian kills him. Only Grace and Mike are left to deal with Brian, but when they think they've got the best of him, he manages to stay alive and stalk them to plot his revenge. Vicious local baboons have a surprise for the increasingly deranged Brian, however-they are hunting the hunter. In this suspenseful thriller, a man is sentenced to ten years in a mental institution for the criminally insane after murdering his wife. In the hospital, the man's doctor slyly tells him about an esoteric law that will allow the patient a new trial if he can escape and stay out of the hospital for two full weeks. Naturally, the patient promptly escapes and ends up staying in the home of a woman whose husband is out of town. She is unhappily married and begins feeling drawn to the fugitive killer. Later the man begins to get suspicious when he discovers a corpse near the house. He trips and tumbles down a flight of stairs. When he regains consciousness, the body has vanished. The police eventually find it, and the woman blames the death on the fugitive. Fortunately, the pressure is too much and the woman finally admits that she and the doctor have been having a passionate affair and that they engineered the whole set up to frame the patient for the death of her husband. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In this offbeat melodrama, a crazed gardener is relegated to a mental hospital after he goes berserk and beheads his wealthy boss. The scuttlebutt in the courtroom is that the killer has stolen over a million dollars from his former employer and has hidden it on the estate. A professional actor is hired to feign insanity to get into the home, befriend the maniac, and find out where he hid the cash. Once he is admitted, the hapless actor encounters bedlam as he meets the patients, undergoes electroshock therapy, and suffers through several injections. This French/Italian effort travelled under the titles Le Jour Et L'Heure, Il Giorno e L'Ora and Viviamo Oggi in Europe. In Great Britain, it was known as Today We Live. No matter the title, the film stars Simone Signoret as a world-weary French aristocrat who finds a purpose in life by joining the World War II Resistance. She is ordered by her fellow undergrounders to hide allied paratrooper Stuart Whitman in her own country estate. At first resenting this intrusion in her life, Signoret falls in love with Whitman, and together they try to escape into Spain.
