A single man faces the terrifying prospect of seeing his carefree life dashed by a visit from the stork in this comedy. Samuel Falkner (Hugh Grant) is a child psychiatrist who has no kids of his own and doesn't want any, which leaves him a bit shaken when his girlfriend of five years, Rebecca Taylor (Julianne Moore) announces that she's pregnant. Suddenly, Samuel is plagued by paranoid fantasies about how marriage and fatherhood will change his life, which are not at all soothed by frequent visits from Rebecca's chronically-pregnant friend Gail Dwyer (Joan Cusack) and her half-bright lummox of a husband, Marty (Tom Arnold). Too selfish to deal with Rebecca's needs, Samuel parts company with her and takes a last stab at playing the field, but when he sees an ultrasound of his soon-to-be-born son, he decides that it's time to face his responsibilities before it's too late. Nine Months also features Robin Williams in a small role as Dr. Kosevich, an ob-gyn with a weak grasp of the English language. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Less a sequel than a pointless remake (the original was actually titled Criminally Insane), this weird little film stars Priscilla Alden in the title role, which she might easily have researched by watching a few John Waters films. We join the story to find hefty, snack-crazed Ethel Janowski a regular fixture at the asylum since her committal more than a decade ago for the murder of her grandmother -- and anyone else who dared to stand between her and the refrigerator. Unfortunately, her dietary requirements seem to have depleted the hospital's budget to such an extent that they are forced to farm her out to a lower-security facility, where the cooking is far superior...and it's binge time again for the large-boned psychopath. Amazingly, this direct-to-video obscurity was followed two years later by yet another sequel, Death Nurse. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Director Alan Parker tackles this adapation of William Wharton's novel, which retains much of the source material's texture and complexity. Matthew Modine is Birdy, who comes back from Vietnam mentally shattered and deludes himself into thinking that he is a bird, an animal that has obsessed him since childhood. Birdy is confined to a military hospital, where he spends his time sitting naked in his room, not acknowleding anyone, moving and acting like a parakeet. His best friend Al (Nicolas Cage), also a wounded Vietnam vet, visits Birdy every day, determined to bring him back to reality. Birdy is occasionally disjointed but enriched by strong performances from Modine and Cage and a number of hard-to-forget moments. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi
