Forty-years after a group of frightened villagers convinced authorities to build the dam that would flood the village of Marinbad and drown the evil that lurks therein, a village built next to the reservoir that sits placid over the cursed ground begins to experience a series of mysterious deaths. Decades ago a curse consumed Marinbad, and as the evil threatened to expand into the surrounding land the villagers successfully lobbied to have their once-peaceful hamlet flooded in hopes of keeping the malevolent spirits contained. Two decades have passed since that fateful attempt to wash away the sins of the land, and now something unspeakable has surfaced in the waters that cover Marinbad. When numerous area people go missing and scores of citizens perish under strange circumstances on the fortieth anniversary of the dam, it begins to appear as the one who was left for dead has risen from the depths. Director Brian Yuzna teams with The Fantastic Factory to adapt an original novel by author Matthew Costello. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Vicente Aranda's Lovers is set in Spain, mostly in Madrid, during the 1950s. The story line is reminiscent of Theodore Dreiser's classic An American Tragedy (which was filmed as A Place in the Sun), wherein a passive, amoral, and shallow protagonist inadvertently destroys the lives of two women who love him. The handsome Paco (Jorge Sanz, who also starred in Belle Epoque and has been called "the Spanish Tom Cruise") is a young soldier involved with a virginal maid, Trini (Maribel Verdu of Y Tu Mama Tambien). Trini is saving her money and planning for their wedding, but Paco tells her not to worry, that he will find a job and save money for them. Paco leaves the army, but has trouble finding and keeping a steady job. He ends up renting a cheap room from Luisa (Spanish superstar Victoria Abril, best known for her work in Pedro Almodovar's films), a beautiful and mysterious widow. Before long, Luisa has seduced the sexually frustrated Paco, and involved him in her moneymaking scams. Trini quickly figures out what is going on, and makes a desperate effort to win back Paco's affection. Paco is obsessed with the sexually experienced and voracious older woman, but is unable to break off his long-term relationship with Trini. He attempts to string them both along, with disastrous results. The film was the first of veteran filmmaker Aranda to get a theatrical release in the United States, thanks largely to Abril's star power, and caused a minor sensation with its sexual explicitness, in particular the infamous "handkerchief scene." ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

The Spanish I'm the One You're Looking For bears echoes of Alfred Hitchcock, though it's unlikely that Hitch would have pushed the envelope as far as director Jaime Chavarri does here. Patricia Adriani plays a beautiful model who is the victim of a brutal rape in a dark section of Barcelona. The violation has an astonishing effect on the young woman. She becomes obsessed with meeting her rapist again, and to that end frequents the seediest of locales and commiserates with the lowest forms of humanity. The question raised here is whether Ms. Adriani is seeking vengeance or some bizarre form of sexual fulfillment. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Sara (Victoria Abril) and her co-star Bruno (Antonio Valero) are popular soap opera stars who try to take a quiet vacation in this screwball comedy. They escape to a remote mountain village but are recognized by the locals who faithfully watch the daily program. Plenty of sight gags and sexual situations occur along with the continual and unwanted appearances of the show's producer Tomas (Antonio Resines). ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Throughout this low-brow semi-comedy, a group of Spanish military inductees regale each other with jokes, indulge in juvenile cameraderie, and generally pass the time away as only the energized young can, voluntarily locked up in a freight car on the train that is taking them to boot camp. While they are busy entertaining themselves in various ways, a fellow recruit who missed the train is chasing it (unsuccessfully) in a taxi, accompanied by his girlfriend. By the end of the train ride, after much commentary on military service and other relevant or not-so-relevant topics, the contrite recruits will have to emerge and face the music. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
