The imaginary world of the world's most popular fantasy role-playing game comes to life in this special-effects laden adventure. In the Empire of Izmer, magic is the key to power in both the supernatural and political realms. The Mages are a sect who know the secrets of magic and use it to hold sway over the masses. The youthful Empress Savina (Thora Birch) wants to use her powers to bring justice and prosperity to all, but Profion (Jeremy Irons) is an evil Mage who wants to use his knowledge of magic to overthrow Savina and establish his own despotic rule. Through deceitful means, Profion wins away the special scepter that allows him to control the nation's Golden Dragons; Savina's only hope to recover the scepter and the rule of Izmer is to obtain the Rod of Savrille, a talisman that will give her powers over the Red Dragons, even more powerful than their golden counterparts. As Savina sets out to gain control of the Red Dragons, she gains a number of unlikely allies, including a pair of thieves, Snails (Marlon Wayans) and Ridely (Justin Whalin); a powerful dwarf, Elwood (Lee Arenberg); and Norda (Kristen Wilson), an elf with a gift for finding lost objects. The fourth and final season of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman begins where the previous season left off, as reporter Clark Kent (Dean Cain) -- aka Superman -- leaves his fiancée, Lois Lane (Teri Hatcher), at the altar in order to rescue an extraterrestrial beauty named Zara (Justine Bateman), who had been Clark's "predestined" bride during his previous life as Kal-El on the planet Krypton. Eventually, this mess is straightened out, and Lois and Clark are finally united in the bonds of matrimony -- no thanks to the last-minute interference of supervillainess Myrtle Beach (Delta Burke), better known as "The Wedding Destroyer" (this may be the only villain in Superman history to travel about in the company of her therapist!). Things don't get much better during the couple's honeymoon, when Clark is compelled to travel back in time by unexpected visitor H.G. Wells (Terry Kiser). Then, upon moving into their new home, the newlyweds are burdened with more headaches as Lois is accused of murder. And to top it off, the couple discovers that their new "best friends" are actually their worst enemies. Add to this the professional envy stirred up when Lois is appointed Clark's boss at the "Daily Planet," and a near-disaster at Christmastime thanks to Superman's longtime nemesis Mr. Mxyzptlk (Howie Mandel), and it is astounding that Lois and Clark haven't served papers on one another before the season is over! However, love conquers all, and by the end of the show's four-year run, Lois and Clark are contemplating the conception of a "super-baby" (and no, we aren't in "Bizarro world"). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The third season of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman gets under way as "Daily Planet" reporter Clark Kent (Dean Cain) finally proposes to his sexy co-worker Lois Lane (Teri Hatcher). Imagine Clark's surprise when, upon preparing to reveal to Lois his true identity as the "Man of Steel" Superman, Lois bluntly informs him that she's already tumbled to his secret -- and that she is rather miffed that he hasn't told her earlier. A wedding date is set, only to be "un-set" by the unexpected reappearance of Superman's arch-enemy, Lex Luthor (John Shea). This traumatic experience causes Lois to lose her memory, not to mention her affections for Clark. By season's end, however, Lois is back to her normal self, and the wedding is rescheduled. Perhaps inevitably, though, another interruption occurs: this time, Clark/Superman must rescue several other refugees from the long-extinct planet Krypton from a deadly peril on their new home planet -- and among the rescuees is Zara (Justine Bateman), who had been Superman's predesignated bride back when he was "Kal-El of Krypton." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Beverly Sutphin (Kathleen Turner) is the perfect suburban housewife and mother. She likes to cook, her home is immaculately clean, she's always well-groomed and cheerful, and she loves her husband Eugene (Sam Waterston) and her two children, Misty (Ricki Lake) and Chip (Matthew Lillard). There's just one problem with Beverly -- if you do anything to make someone in her family feel bad, you're dead meat on a stick. While she does a great job of hiding it, Beverly has a vicious and vengeful streak, and when she's not making obscene prank calls to the neighbors or bribing her garbagemen to save embarrassing items from her neighbors' trash, she's mowing down whoever would be so rude as to make her husband go into his office on a Saturday, break up with her daughter, or suggest that her son watches too many horror movies. Taking John Waters back to R-rated territory after the relatively sedate Hairspray and Cry Baby, Serial Mom captures a comfortable middle ground between Hollywood professionalism and Waters' subversive sense of humor, and Kathleen Turner has a field day as the sweet-on-the-outside, evil-on-the-inside Beverly. The supporting cast includes such Waters favorites as Patty Hearst, Traci Lords, Mink Stole, and Susan Lowe; Joan Rivers and Suzanne Somers appear as themselves, and all-female grunge-metal band L7 plays the all-female grunge-metal band Camel Toe. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Season one of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman ended as Lois Lane (Teri Hatcher), star reporter for the "Daily Planet," was on the verge of marrying Lex Luthor (John Shea), Metropolis' wealthiest and most beloved philanthropist -- while super-powered Superman (Dean Cain) had taken flight with evidence that Luthor was in fact a master criminal. As season two opens, the wedding is broken up and the disgraced Luthor (apparently) commits suicide, leaving Lois to continue her efforts to win the heart of her fellow reporter Clark Kent -- never suspecting that Kent and Superman are one and the same. The Lois-Clark romance is placed in jeopardy by Clark's constant disappearances whenever danger threatens; unaware that Clark is making his traditional transformation into "Man of Steel" Superman, poor Lois concludes that she isn't all that important to him! Also, Lex Luthor seemingly rises from the dead mid-season to cause more trouble for the benighted couple. Season two marks the first appearance of Justin Whalin as cub reporter-photographer Jimmy Olsen, replacing season-one's Michael Landes, whom the producers decided was too old for the role. Also, a number of formidable villains arise to take the place of the nearly departed Luthor, notably The Prankster (Bronson Pinchot) and the various minions of "Intergang." The season arrives at its cliffhanger finale as Clark Kent prepares to reveal his secret identity to Lois, and to ask for her hand in marriage -- only to head "up, up, and away" once more, this time to rescue his adoptive parents (K Callan, Eddie Jones) from kidnappers. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Music bridges a gap between two cultures in this made-for-TV drama. In 1957, Derek Sanders (Peter Scolari) is hired to teach music and direct the choir at Blanton Academy, a private school in South Carolina. Integration has not yet come to Blanton, and a number of students display an open hostility towards African-American in the community, most notably Taylor Bradshaw (Justin Whalin), one of the school bullies who makes no secret of his dislike of people of color. As Sanders tries to impress a more open-minded attitude upon the boys in his choir, he introduces a new vocalist to the group -- Landy Allen (Eugene Byrd), the teenaged son of Zeke (Moses Gunn), the school's black caretaker. Despite his initial enmity, Bradshaw strikes up a friendship with Allen based on their shared love for music, and as Allen teaches Bradshaw about the blues, he also finds himself learning about a people and a community he previously know almost nothing about. This ecological drama, set in 2017, presents a world where pollution has generated ever more unpredictable weather and rendered large chunks of the planet into disaster zones. After a hurricane destroys everything they've built for themselves, Louisiana shrimp fisherman Drew Morgan (Craig T. Nelson) and his family, including wife Suzanne (Bonnie Bedelia), flee through a series of refugee camps to upstate New York, where Drew's estranged former business partner Larry Richter (Jurgen Prochnow) -- who has designs on Suzanne -- lives in comfort and affluence. Along the way, Drew loses his daughter, Linnie (Ashley Jones), to an agrarian doomsday cult; watches his elderly father (Richard Farnsworth) suffer a stroke; and almost drives away his confused oldest son, Paul (Justin Whalin). When Larry offers to shelter Drew's family if Drew himself will leave, Suzanne and the kids rally behind him. Things go awry, however, when an attempt to smuggle themselves across the border ends with Craig washed up on Canadian shores and the rest of the family stranded and penniless back in America. Originally presented as a two-part miniseries, The Fire Next Time premiered on CBS on April 18 and 20, 1993. The movie has no connection to the James Baldwin book of the same name. ~ Brian J. Several years have passed since the events of the previous film, and yet again the makers of Good Guys dolls -- a line which included the homicidal Chucky -- decide to reinstate their product line. Unfortunately, some of the materials used are still imbued with the evil spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray (voice of Brad Dourif), whose soul once inhabited the Chucky doll... and who returns to action in a spanking new Good Guy body. Determined at first to finish the job he started by swapping bodies with young Andy (Justin Whalin) -- who is now a teenager in military school -- Chucky decides to change tactics, setting his sights on a much younger boy. When Andy becomes aware of the situation, he is compelled to put a stop to Chucky's Satanic antics once and for all. The signs of a creatively-depleted horror franchise are evident (they had already shown themselves in the previous installment), but there is still enough juice left for the spooky climax, which borrows a riff from Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

The Dead Pool is the fifth and (thus far) the last of Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry movies. A sports pool is placing bets on which famous person will die next. Suddenly a serial killer who preys upon celebrities enters the scene, radically (and perhaps deliberately) changing the odds in the pool. As a celebrity of sorts, maverick cop Dirty Harry Callahan becomes a target of the killer, as does high-profile TV journalist Patricia Clarkson. Surprises are at a minimum in The Dead Pool; the film gets down to business quickly, moves logically if violently towards its climax (with a spectacular car-chase sequence thrown in for good measure), and delivers exactly what its fans expect. One major difference between this film and the earlier Dirty Harry epics is that the murders are committed in so outrageous a fashion that the picture seems at times to be a Freddie Krueger vehicle. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
