Douglas Fairbanks is at his most graceful and charismatic in one of the classic silent films of the 1920s. As the thief of Baghdad, his movements are dance-like -- nothing like the athletics he performed in most of his other films. In this Arabian take, the thief ignores the holy teachings and sneaks into the palace of the Caliph (Brandon Hurst). All thoughts of robbery slip away, however, when he sees the beautiful princess (Julanne Johnston). Princes have come from many faraway lands to win the princess' hand (and it's amusing to watch her face growing ever more alarmed at their arrival, because each one is uglier than the last). The thief disguises himself as a prince and the princess falls in love with him. After having a pang of conscience, the thief confesses all to the Holy Man (Charles Belcher), who sends him to find a magic chest. He braves many obstacles to get it, and when he returns he discovers that the Mongol Prince (Sojin) has taken over the city. Using the chest, the reformed thief creates armies of men out of nothingness and recaptures the city. He then uses the cloak of invisibility to spirit the princess away on a magic carpet. Fairbanks stole some of the special effects for his film from Fritz Lang's Der Müde Tod, which he had purchased for American distribution. The Thief of Baghdad, with its look of unrealistic beauty (courtesy of art director William Cameron Menzies), was not fully appreciated in its day. Because of its huge cost (two million dollars -- a real fortune in those days), it made little money. After that, Fairbanks stuck closer to the swashbuckling persona he felt his audience wanted. Available now on DVD, the remastered film features a new score by Carl Davis. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi

Both Ramon Novarro and Barbara LaMarr had just appeared in Prisoner of Zenda and their careers were on the ascendant when director Rex Ingram used them once again for this remake of his 1917 picture Black Orchids. However, Lewis Stone -- also a Prisoner of Zenda alumnus -- almost steals the show. Leon de Severac (Pomeroy Cannon) is lecturing his daughter, Jacqueline (LaMarr), about her flirtatious ways. To hammer his point home, he tells her the following tale: Zareda, a beautiful fortune teller (also LaMarr), is loved by Ivan de Maupin (Navarro). Ivan's father, the Baron (Edward Connelly) also lusts after her, and Ivan comes to believe she is faithless. He goes to war and Zareda learns that the Baron is planning on poisoning the Marquis Ferroni (Stone), a millionaire. She makes sure the wine glasses -- one of which contains the poison -- are switched, and the Baron dies instead. Zareda marries the Marquis and when Ivan returns from battle, she instigates a duel between the two men. The Marquis is fatally wounded, but when he sees his scheming wife in Ivan's arms, he summons up enough life force to make sure that the pair meet untimely demises. Black Orchids was originally a novel by Honore de Balzac. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi

Before he teamed up with Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy co-starred with a number of other comedians. Often he was more talented than those he appeared with, as is obvious in this two-reeler with Jimmy Aubrey in the lead. It is Hardy (wearing a walrus mustache and caterpillar-like fake eyebrows), not Aubrey, who elicits the most laughs. Aubrey is a waiter at a fashionable nightclub and Hardy plays the appropriately named I.M. Ruff, an irascible customer. While Jimmy is waiting on Ruff (or getting on his nerves), another patron picks Ruff's pocket and, after taking the money, places the wallet in Jimmy's pants. The theft is discovered when Ruff tries to pay his bill and Jimmy is thrown in jail. Unfortunately for him, the prison warden happens to be Ruff. He manages somehow to escape, and Ruff goes in pursuit. Both of them are chased by a bear. Jimmy heads back to the nightclub where he has a rendezvous with his favorite dancer before being caught. Eventually his innocence is proven, and Ruff gives him some money as restitution. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi
