Prolific B-movie director Albery Byun (Dollman, Omega Doom) takes the reigns for this tale of a small town overtaken by a highly contagious alien plague on the night of the senior prom. As the local teens party their way through prom night, a meteor crashes to the earth in a small California town, rattling Lawton rancher Larry Jenkins. When Larry puts a call in to the local police, Inspector Bardo is immediately dispatched to the scene to investigate. Upon arriving on the scene, Inspector Bardo is terrified to find that a horrific alien virus has infected the unsuspecting Jenkins. Before he can react, Inspector Bardo is savagely attacked by the rampaging rancher. Now, as the two unwitting hosts make their way into Lawton while viciously attacking and contaminating everyone in their path, adolescent lovebirds Cheryl and Timmy sit perched high atop Lover's Lane completely unaware of the approaching terror. When Timmy is infected, Cheryl is left to fend for herself in the darkened forest. She becomes his first victim after she discovers his true identity. Quinn, though a cold-blooded murderer, has a certain charm and soon everyone is fooled, except for Gus a young attendant at a gas station. "Based on the Georgia case that shocked the country" (or so said its ad copy), the made-for-TV Stay the Night was originally telecast in two parts in April of 1992. Part One introduces Barbara Hershey as a predatory middle-aged woman who seduces feckless teenager Morgan Wessler. Before this two-hour installment has run its course, Barbara has talked Morgan into murdering her husband and taking sole blame for the deed. In part two, first seen April 27, 1992, Morgan's mother Jane Alexander turns the tables on Barbara, using several of the villainess' own dirty tricks. While Stay the Night is rough sledding during the first half, its denouement is well worth the wait. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Corey Haim takes on white supremacist rollerbladers in Prayer of the Rollerboys, the futuristic tale of teen angst and sweet love on skates. Haim stars as Chris Griffin, a pizza delivery boy whose younger brother Miltie (Devin Clark) gets caught up with the local drug-pusher gang, the Rollerboys. With the help of Casey (Patricia Arquette), a female cop out for revenge for her own brother's death, they help bring down the dreaded 'boys for good. But the deeper Chris and Miltie get into the crew, the scarier their racist attitudes become, especially when its revealed that repeated use of their drug will sterilize the entire population of L.A. outside of the Rollerboys' inner circle. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

The Long Road Home evokes memories of The Grapes of Wrath, though it doesn't quite reach the same heights as the earlier film. Mark Harmon heads up a family of migrant workers, toiling in California's San Joaquin Valley in 1937. Harmon's brood is obliged to face down not only the Depression but also exploitive farm owners. When one too many human rights is trampled upon, a union movement takes shape amongst the migrants. Though distinctly American in subject and tone, The Long Road Home was produced by Britain's Norman Rosemont. Unfortunately, this made-for-TV film premiered during an unusually cluttered February "sweeps week" in 1991; there was so much competition that Long Road Home was not even warranted the standard full-page TV Guide ad. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Filmed in semidocumentary fashion, Extreme Close-up features Morgan Weisser as a 16-year-old boy grieving the death of his mother (Blair Brown). Trying to assuage his grief, Weisser runs family videotapes of his mother. It becomes increasingly clear that the woman was falling apart emotionally in the months before her death, and Weisser wants to know why. Looking for answers, he begins taping new videos of his turbulent home life -- which slowly mirror the disintegration of his mother. Made for television, Extreme Close-up was written by thirtysomething veterans Marshall Herkovitz and Edward Zwick; its director was Peter Horton, who'd played Gary on thirtysomething. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This bleak post-apocalyptic science fiction actioner substitutes a plague instead of a bomb as the reason for civilization's demise but the result is the same -- grizzly motorcycle gangs with a ton of gasoline to burn. In City Limits the older generation has been wiped out by the plague, and the younger generation lives in a state of anarchy in a world controlled by biker gangs. The gangs live by rules discovered in pre-apocalyptic comic books. Two rival biker gangs, the Clippers and the DAs, have taken to dividing up a city amongst themselves and live under a fragile truce. Utilizing a comic-strip version of medieval times, a code has been established for violations of the pact between the gangs -- competitive jousting or acts of reciprocal retaliation. When a person dies, like a post-Holocaust Viking funeral, he is cremated along with his motorcycle. But this shaky peace between the bike gangs is threatened when the fascistic Sunya Corporation attempts to take over the city with the cooperation of the DA bike gang. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide
