A group of strangers are brought together under unexpectedly dangerous circumstances in this offbeat drama. Trucker Odell Parks (Robert Forster) pulls into a diner in Ozona, Texas, for a cup of coffee, where a number of other weary travelers are taking a break. Wit Roy (Kevin Pollak) is an out-of-work clown trying to figure out how to get to Las Vegas on his last few dollars, where a job offer awaits; his girlfriend Earlene (Penelope Ann Miller), a one time stripper, is tagging along and thinks that she knows how to raise some money. Reba Twosalt (Kateri Walker), a Native American, is heading west with her Grandmother; the old woman is dying, and they would like to see the ocean together one last time. And Marcy and Bonnie (Sherilyn Fenn and Beth Ann Styne) are two sisters en route to the funeral of their father. As the customers eat their food and drink their coffee, the radio is playing vintage jazz and blues, a form of protest from the disc jockey, Dix Mayal (Taj Mahal), who is breaking the station's country and western format after being forced to work an extra shift by his boss, station manager Floyd Bibbs (Meat Loaf). However, there's a killer on the highway near Ozona, and very soon all of these people will find themselves crossing his path. In this comedy-drama set in the late 1950s, Manny Singer (Ray Liotta) is a songwriter who makes his living penning jingles for radio and television commercials. Manny's wife has recently died, leaving him an emotionally broken man; Manny buries himself in his work rather than deal with his grief. His young daughter Molly (Tina Majorino) is taking it even harder; since her mother's passing, Molly has refused to speak. Manny realizes that he needs help taking care of the house and looking after Molly, so he places an ad looking for a maid who can double as a nanny. After a long series of unsuitable applicants, Manny meets Corrina Washington (Whoopi Goldberg), who isn't much on cooking, cleaning, or domestic chores -- but who strikes an immediate chord with Molly. Corrina gets the job, and her vivacious, unconventional personality brings the joy of living back to the Singer home. A romance also begins to bloom between Manny and Corrina, though Manny quickly discovers that being in an interracial relationship in 1959 is not always easy or pleasant. The 1988 TV movie Maybe Baby stars Jane Curtin as Julia, a 39-year-old career woman, married to upwardly mobile 57-year-old Hal (Dabney Coleman). Julia and Hal had originally agreed not to have children, but after heeding the tick-tock of her biological clock, Julia has changed her mind. At first resistant to the concept of parenthood, Hal goes along with his wife's new agenda, confident that at her age the chances of pregnancy are slim. But Julia does get pregnant--and suddenly begins to harbor second thoughts. Thanks to a mix-up at birth, two sets of twins are separated and grow up in radically different social circles. The four baby girls grow up to be Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin-and Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin. One of the Midlers is a ruthless New York CEO, while one of the Tomlins is her air-headed "save the whales" business partner. Thousands of miles away in a Southern industrial town, a blue-collar Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin work for a company that the white-collar Midler plans to devour in a hostile takeover. The "poor" Midler and Tomlin head to New York to argue against the takeover, inevitably getting mixed up with the "rich" Midler and Tomlin. Not much time is actually spent in Weasel Creek in this made-for-TV movie, despite its title. Essentially, this is a semiserious "road" picture concerning the misadventures of a rambunctious young girl (Mare Winningham). Linking up with a runaway farm boy (John Hammond), the girl heads to California with only the clothes on her back and the few possessions from her house trailer. En route, the boy stops over in the aptly named Weasel Creek to visit his aunt (Colleen Dewhurst). The film is populated with such familiar rustic types as Barry Corbin, Richard Farnsworth and Trey Wilson. A Few Days in Weasel Creek first aired October 21, 1981. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
