Flood Tide can be described as The Children's Hour gone ballistic. Michel Ray is David Gordon a sweet-faced little boy who dotes on his widowed mother Anne (Cornell Borchers) - but has a nasty, pathological penchant for lying. When a body washes up on the beach and a man is arrested, David tells a few "convenient" lies that get the fellow arrested. The owner of the adjacent beach house, Steve Martin (George Nader) returns from a trip, learns of the situation, and discusses in detail why he thinks the boy is being deceptive; he then spends the rest of the movie romantically pursuing Anne while attempting to earn David's trust and extract a confession from him that will free the unjustly convicted fellow. In this adventure, a remake of Singapore (1947), a hero finds a bracelet containing 13 precious gems while visiting Istanbul. He soon finds himself pursued by covetous crooks who want those jewels. He is then deported by the Turkish authorities, but not before he has time to hide the bracelet in a hotel. Five years later, the man returns to seek out the stones. Again he is pursued by both authorities and criminals. He must also contend with the reappearance of his wife whom he thought had burned to death on their wedding night. This emotional drama concerns a WWII medic who marries a German woman but leaves her in a jealous rage, taking their baby with him. They lose touch after she is arrested behind the Iron Curtain after the war. Eight years later, she sees him in a Chicago cafe, rushes across the street to see him, and is hit by a truck. Germany's first CinemaScrope feature, Oase (Oasis) was directed by France's Yves Allegret and distributed by Hollywood's 20th Century-Fox. Michele Morgan and Cornell Borchers stars as Francoisce and Karin, a pair of gorgeous lady smugglers. The ladies are sent by their respective gangs to halt the activities of novice gold smuggler Antoine (Carl Raddatz). Francoise gums up the plan by falling in love with Antoine, while Karin remains loyal to her compatriots. As it turns out, only Antoine emerges the winner in this contretemps. Based on a true story, The Divided Heart is an effective, high-gloss British soap opera. Cornell Borchers stars as Inga, a young German woman who disappears and is presumed killed during WW2. Inga's infant son is placed in an orphanage; years later, the boy is adopted by childless couple Sonja (Yvonne Mitchell) and Franz (Armin Dahmen). The adoptive parents' future happiness is shattered when Inga returns, insisting that the child be returned to her. The film is scrupulously fair to both Inga and Sonja, giving generous screen time to the wartime horrors experienced by the former and the eminent parental suitability of the latter. Adapted from a novel by Andre Maurois, Schule fuer Ehegluck (School for Connubial Bliss) concerns young marrieds Justus and Marianne Schneeman (Paul Hubschmid, Liselotte Pulver). Feeling that Marianne is insensitive to his ambitions, Justus finds a woman who does "understand" him. As he rises to success, his affection for the other woman increases while his marriage slowly crumbles. Eventually he realizes that Marianne was the right woman for him all along, but only after learning to tell the difference between true love and false flattery. Aka House of Life, this German film takes place in a busy maternity hospital. The multicharactered, multistoried narrative is somewhat reminiscent of the 1930s Hollywood production Life Begins. The expectant mothers run the usual stereotypical gamut, from the unwed mom worthy of love and motherhood to the selfish socialite who really shouldn't be permitted to procreate. Linking the stories together are Dr. Haidt (Gustav Froelich) and his female assistant (Cornell Borchers), who has her own deeply personal reasons for her choice of profession. The scene is postwar Vienna. Displaced person Toni Sponer (Gustav Froelich), employed as a cabdriver, wants to leave the city but has no identification papers. When one of his passengers is murdered, Toni appropriates the dead man's papers and "becomes" one Jack Mortimer. Unfortunately, there are several shady characters around and about who want Jack Mortimer dead. The location-filmed finale finds Toni at the mercy of the real Mortimer's murderer. Filmed on location, The Big Lift is a reenactment of the Berlin airlift of 1948. Flexing their postwar muscles, the Russians blockade the Western sector, refusing to allow the Allies to ship supplies to the starving Berliners. From their headquarters at Templehof Airport, a group of courageous American flyers risk their lives to transport supplies by air.
