Robert Alda Movies
Actor Robert Alda studied architecture at NYU, briefly working in this field until choosing show business. He started performing in vaudeville, and in burlesque as a tenor and straight man; by 1934, he was well established on radio. He made a spectacular film debut in Warner Bros.' 1945 biopic Rhapsody in Blue (1945), essaying the role of George Gershwin over the objections of director Irving Rapper, who'd wanted to hold off production until Tyrone Power was available. Alda did as good a job as possible, given the banalities of the scripts, though his piano-playing sequences are obviously faked and tricked up. Alda's starring career faded out rather quickly; he was more successful with second leads and villainous roles, and in the early 1960s became a fixture of Italian sword-and-sandal and spy films. Returning to Broadway in 1950, Alda created the role of Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, winning a Tony Award in the process. In 1954, he starred in the syndicated TV series Secret File USA. Robert Alda was the father of Alan Alda, with whom he appeared in a poignant MASH TV episode of the late 1970s. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie GuideEmbarking upon their honeymoon, Quincy (Jack Klugman) and Emily (Anita Gillette) accept the invitation of an old friend, Judge Blake, to spend a "private" weekend at a ski lodge. Alas, the weekend proves anything but private when several other guests, all of them in the law-enforcement business, start pouring into the lodge. Making matters worse, an unknown maniac is murdering the assembled guests one by one--and a raging blizzard has cut off all avenues of escape. Yes, it's "Ten Little Indians", Quincy-style, with a dash of the 1932 film classic The Old Dark House thrown in via guest star Henry Gibson's portrayal of an inscrutably mute caretaker. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
This is the obligatory "lone dissenting voice" episode, in which medical examiner Quincy finds himself serving on a jury in the murder trial of Frank Munson (Morgan Stevens). Although he has promised his superiors that he will not allow his professional expertise influence his decision, our hero can't help but notice that there are several serious flaws in the prosecution's evidence--and of course, he can't stop himself from loudly expressing his feelings in court, much to the dismay of everyone concerned (except the defendant). This episode was originally scheduled to air on January 28, 1981. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Bo (John Schneider) and Luke (Tom Wopat) champion the cause of runaway heiress Suzy Holmes (Susan Walden), who has stowed away in the boys' car to avoid the hired minions of her nasty millionaire father C.J. Holmes (Robert Alda). Hoping to elope with her boyfriend Fred Andrews (Edward Edwards), Suzy persuades the Dukes to help deliver her fiance across the county line--in effect asking our heroes to break their parole and risk arrest. Mr. Holmes strikes back at the Dukes by kidnapping Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle), while Boss Hogg (Sorrell Booke) also gets into the game, hoping that by returning Suzy to her daddy he'll be rewarded with one of the famous Holmes oil wells. This episode marks the final appearance of Daisy Duke's (Catherine Bach) famous yellow car--and the introduction of her even more famous white jeep "Dixie". ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

We're not sure who the gentlemen are in this TV movie adaptation of Nora Ephron's Perfect Gentlemen, but there's no doubt as to the identity of the ladies. The plot revolves around three convict's wives. Sandy Dennis owns a bankrupt deli; Lisa Pelikan is pregnant and broke; and Lauren Bacall (in her TV movie debut) is the wealthy wife of an incarcerated labor leader, who has just learned that her husband was cheating on her. Teaming up, the three ladies plan to steal the million dollars that was supposed to secure the release of Bacall's errant hubby. Along for the ride is Lisa Pelikan's mother-in-law Ruth Gordon, a veteran safecracker. Perfect Gentlemen sags a bit a midpoint, but overall is good underhanded fun. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Deadly Dust began as the opening episode of the live-action TV series The Amazing Spider-Man. Nicholas Hammond stars as Peter Parker, who after being bitten by a radioactive spider is transformed into the web-slinging, wall-crawling Spider-Man (a character created for the Marvel Comics line by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby). In his first TV adventure, Spider-Man is accused of stealing plutonium from a university lab, but the real culprits are terrorists who demand a one-billion-dollar ransom, lest they expose New York City to plutonium poisoning. Featured in the cast is Joanna Cameron, who'd once played a "super" character herself, a do-gooder named Isis, on Saturday morning TV. Deadly Dust was first telecast as a Spider-Man two-parter on April 5 and 12, 1978. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This Italian horror outing is made even more horrible by the fact that the first two thirds were originally a complete feature, Lisa and the Devil by Mario Bava and the last third was tacked on later to capitalize on the continued popularity of The Exorcist by producer Alfredo Leone thereby nearly obliterating the spooky tone created in Bava's original. Innocent, voluptuous Lisa's travails begin when she sees a wax mannequin in her own image. She then sees a sinister fellow, whom she knows is the devil, hanging around nearby and runs for her life. Unfortunately, she ends up hiding in the mansion of a typical creepshow psycho family who prefer spending their evenings making love to everything and every one that moves, or doesn't move in the case of one necrophiliac. If that weren't creepy enough, Lisa gets a luck at the butler and realizes that he is old Satan himself. Surprise! Soon she finds herself possessed and doing the things that post Exorcist demonized movie stars are expected to including the obligatory projectile vomiting (this time it's frogs rather than pea soup), lasciviousness and a few levitation exercises until the brave exorcist arrives to cure her. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
Prolific character actor Ed Lauter enjoys one of his few starring roles in this made-for-TV mystery yarn. Set in the 1940s, the film casts Lauter as Bud Delaney, a former policeman who was bounced from the force after being framed by a mysterious higher-up. As he tries to track down the person responsible for his firing, Delaney keeps food on the table by working as a house detective in a seedy Hollywood hotel, moonlighting as a private eye. Along the way, he gets mixed up in the theft of a movie star's jewelry and the murder of a pompous gambler--two seemingly diverse crimes that are actually, and inextricably, linked together. Originally telecast April 19, 1975 by NBC, Last Hours Before Morning was the pilot film for the unsold weekly series Delaney. ~Saw Film/TV Guide/Goldberg/Marrill/Internet ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
