The Matrix masterminds Andy and Larry Wachowski usher anime icon Tatsuo Yoshida's classic 1960s-era hit into the new millennium with this family-friendly story of a young racecar driver who takes on the mysterious Racer X in a custom-made, gadget-loaded speed machine named the Mach 5. Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is the kind of driver that every wheelman wishes he could be: a born winner whose unbeatable combination of aggression, instinct, and fearlessness always finds him crossing the checkered flag with a comfortable lead. Upon turning down Royalton's (Roger Allam) astronomical offer, Speed Racer makes the shocking discovery that the outcomes of the biggest races are being predetermined by a handful of powerful moguls who pad their profits by manipulating the drivers. Realizing that his career would be ruined if word of the fix gets out, Royalton vows that the Mach 5 will never make it to another finish line. Now, the only way for Speed Racer to save the family business and beat Royalton at his own game will be to win the very same race that claimed his brother's life so many years ago. But despite her efforts to escape the pressures of her job, Helen is inexorably drawn into a murder case involving her housekeeper Cath Boyce (Lynda Steadman). The ensuing intrigue -- which involves domestic abuse, a horrible secret, and a second murder -- not only wears Helen's nerves to a frazzle, but also seriously jeopardizes her romance with the detective on the case, Chief Superintendent Geoffrey Bailey (Connor Mullen). British rock musician and video director Lol Creme directed this whimsical tale featuring madmen, talking trees and big-breasted women. Aloysius (Paul Campbell) is a sweet-natured idiot who spends most of his time in a small Jamaican town talking to trees and animals. In fact, his best friend is a giant limbed tree, sleeping under its branches at night. Problems begin with the arrival of a sex-crazed German tourist named Inga (Julie T. Wallace), who enlists Aloysius as a guide and erotic slave. So insatiable is this busty German that Aloysius is compelled to complain, "Dee pum pum is worse tyranny than colonialism." Aloysius's plight intensifies when Inga's father cuts off her supply of money. Desperate for cash, she persuades Aloysius and her other paramour, the aptly named Service Johnson (Carl Bradshaw), to break into the home of wealthy Busha (Reggie Carter) to steal his money. Aloysius agrees, convinced that Inga is the love of his life. But the robbery goes bad and, although Aloysius saves the life of Busha, he faces hard time at the local workhouse. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

Two terminal cancer patients break out of the hospital in a final attempt to enjoy their last days in this black comedy drama. Decker (Anthony Edwards) is an American ex-football player resigned to die. Bancroft (Timothy Dalton) is an attorney who is more optimistic and talks Decker into a journey to a Dutch whorehouse for a final fling. The unlikely duo steal an ambulance and head for Holland. They make a stop at the wedding of Bancroft's former flame -- who abandoned him with his terminal illness. Decker and Bancroft come across two women with car trouble, Maureen (Camille Coduri) and Hazel (Janet McTeer). Maureen and Decker immediately hit it off, but Bancroft considers the meeting an interruption of their quest. The women are unaware the two men are dying, and the men have no way of knowing Hazel is pregnant. Fay Weldon's wittily wicked 1983 novel The Life and Loves of a She-Devil was the source for this near-legendary British TV miniseries. Julie T. Wallace starred as Ruth Patchett, the frumpy, wart-ridden wife of low-profile accountant Bobbo Patchett (Dennis Waterman). Already cursed with a brood of annoying children and a dingy suburban household, Ruth was dealt another blow when her husband deserted her in favor of glamorous, jet-setting romance novelist Mary Fisher (Patricia Hodge). Determined to get even with her rival and to restake her claim on Bobbo (who hardly seems worth the effort), Ruth embarked upon a campaign of revenge and conquest that rivalled anything cooked up by Machiavelli or the Borgias -- beginning with a spectacular fashion makeover, courtesy of British cosmetic designer Elizabeth Rowell. Several real-life authors appeared in the supporting cast of this four part, award-winning satirical drama, which originally aired over BBC2 from October 8 to 29, 1986, then was seen in America courtesy of the A&E cable service. Most critics agree that the "original" version of The Life and Loves of a She Devil far outclasses the later American theatrical-film adaptation starring Roseanne and Meryl Streep. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
