After several years of starring on his own WB sitcom, Steve Harvey returned to the network to helm a weekly, hour-long variety show. The guests were not the usual run of A- and B-list showbiz celebrities, but instead what Harvey described as "the superstars of your neighborhood": otherwise normal, everyday people with unusual and/or peculiar talents. Performers ranged from a four-year-old political expert to a 90-year-old rap artist. Distancing this program from the usual "let's make fun of innocent people" talent show was the fact that the guests performed their acts before a warm and appreciative host and studio audience, and were neither booed or rushed off the stage. Providing low-key but entertaining Thursday-night competition for rival series Friends and Survivor, Steve Harvey's Big Time debuted September 10, 2003. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A kindly fellow, he decides to help them out. But with their lack of talent and less than a week to go, things look grim until the group is able to convince their reluctant fourth sibling (the one with real talent) to pitch in for their mama and do his stuff on stage. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The proverbial tangled web of deceit proves to be all but inextricable when both Will (Will Smith) and Lisa (Nia Long) make up stories as to why they can't go out on a scheduled date. As "luck" would have it, both of them end up at the same party, and both have a lot of 'splainin' to do. But Will and Lisa's prevarications pale in comparison to the lie told by Ashley (Tatyana M. Ali), who is discovered dallying in a cloakroom with a football player when she's supposed to be somewhere else entirely. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
While scouting out potential colleges, Will (Will Smith) and Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) are detoured in Nevada, with an uninvited Jazz along for the ride. Ending up in a café-casino, our heroes are consumed by gambling fever--leading into a potentially lethal run-in with some rather tough customers. Although Janet Hubert-Whitten (Vivian) does not appear in this episode, we do get generous glimpses of heavyweight boxing champ Riddick Bowe--to say nothing of former Miami Vice costar Olivia Brown. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Both Will (Will Smith) and Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) aspire to join an all-black college fraternity. After a humiliating initiation ritual, Will is accepted--but Carlton is rejected as a Bel Air-bred "sellout" to his race. This sets the stage for a remarkable closing sequence, in which an indignant Carlton brilliantly defends himself, and his choices in life. Award-winning stage and screen actor Glenn Plummer is seen as the hostile fraternity head man. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Hoping for one last "bonding" session with Will (Will Smith) and Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) before they head off to college, Philip (James Avery) bundles the reluctant teens off on a special camping trip. It isn't long before the intrepid trio gets lost, then trapped by a blinding snowstorm. Salvation comes literally from above when a sack containing $25,000 falls from the sky. This bankroll is actually the grand prize in a radio contest, but Will doesn't know this as he sets fire to the bills in order to stay warm! Chi McBride (Boston Public, The Nine) shows up in a supporting role. This episode was originally seen on Thursday, rather than the series' standard Monday-night timeslot. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
So eager is Cliff (Bill Cosby) to get Sondra (Sabrina LeBeauf) and Elvin (Geoffrey Owens) out of the house that he agrees to babysit the twins while the couple moves into their new home in New Jersey. In his efforts to keep the kids entertained, Cliff plays a rough-house game with them--which culminates in his breaking the grandfather clock in the living room. Terrified that Clair (Phylicia Rashad) will give him what-for when she sees the damage, Cliff is "rescued" in the nick of time by a pair of resourceful moving men (played by network sportscasters Jim Valvano and Dick Vitale!) This episode was originally shown in tandem with "Cliff Gets Jilted". ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Embarrassed that his wife Bernice (Catherine Cox) is more athletically skilled than he is, father-to-be Alfred Phelps (Ray Demattis) prevails upon Cliff (Bill Cosby) to act as his sports coach, in anticipation of the birth of the couple's son. Alas, Cliff's input does nothing to build up Mr. Phelps' ego, so it is up to Theo (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) to straighten out a knotty situation. Meanwhile, Pam (Erika Alexander) prepares for a date with Aaron Dexter (Seth Gilliam), an intelligent but timid fellow who is quite a contrast to Pam's boisterous Bed-Stuy buddies. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
B.B. King guest stars as legendary blues singer Riley Jackson, the lifelong idol of Theo Huxtable (Malcolm-Jamal Warner). Thrilled to discover that Jackson is an old friend of his grandparents Russell and Anna, Theo ends up seeking advice from Riley on an affair of the heart. This leads to a snowballing series of misinterpreted singals, wherein everybody concludes that Theo is primed to pop the question to his girlfriend Justine (Michelle Thomas). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Invited to go on an archeological trip to Egypt, Theo (Malcolm Jamal-Warner) is unable to rely on his parents for the necessary money--he's already into them way, way too deep to ask for even a penny more! Meanwhile, Theo's pals Howard (Reno Wilson) and Lou (Alex Ruiz) try to persuade Cliff (Bill Cosby) and Clair (Phylicia Rashad) that the trip will do their son a world of good. Joining the chorus is Theo's teacher Professor Grayson (Eden Svendahl), a clever and capricious lady who provides this final episode of The Cosby Show's fifth season with a most unusual throughline. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Clair (Phylicia Rashad) appears on a Sunday TV panel show, where she debates a few fine historical points with a trio of stuffy and arrogant male professors. The other panelists either ignore her comments or grandiosely condescend to her--but in the end Clair makes such an impression that the producers ask her to become a weekly regular! All of this coincides with the "separation pains" suffered by Cliff (Bill Cosby) when his favorite couch is given to Sondra (Sabrina LeBeauf) and Elvin (Geoffrey Owens). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Coming down with a bad case of strep throat, Sondra (Sabrina LeBeauf) is temporarily unable to care for the twins by herself. This situation proves to be a golden opportunity for the babies' grandmothers Clair (Phylicia Rashad) and Francine (Marcella Lowery), who swoop down and "kidnap" the twins for a fun family outing. As an outraged Sondra (who has long dreaded this moment) chases all over town, the babies and their doting grandmas zip and zap from one location to another, seemingly at the speed of light! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
When Theo's buddy Denny (Troy Winbush) finds a valuable designer watch, his friends pressure him into giving the timepiece to his girlfriend Jade (Vanessa Williams) as a present. Unfortunately, the watch turns out to be stolen, and both Jade and Denny end up at the local cop shop. Though this crisis is resolved, Jade is so mad at Denny that she dumps him on the spot--and in his efforts to bring the couple back together, Cliff(Bill Cosby) as usual makes things all that much worse! Featured in the cast is Don Reed, who'd previously played Chip St. Charles on the Cosby Showspinoff A Different World. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Singer Melba Moore guest stars as Rudy's schoolteacher Mrs. Abbott. When her parents get a letter from her teacher, Rudy (Keshia Knight Pulliam) fears the worst. Actually, Mrs. Abbott is quite pleased with Rudy's classroom performance, except for the fact that the girl refuses to play the violin in music class. Accordingly, Cliff (Bill Cosby) invites classmates Kenny (Deon Richmond) and Kim (Naoka Nakagawa) to the house to rehearse with Rudy, despite Kenny's fears that the girls will clash--as in "clash of cymbals!" ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
