A filmmaker struggles with her personal life and her professional goals in this independent drama from Canadian writer and director Ingrid Veninger, who also plays the leading role, Ruby White. Ruby is struggling with an increasingly distant relationship with her husband and wants to reconnect with her daughter Sara (Halle Switzer, who is Veninger's daughter in real life), now eighteen years old and expecting her first child. Ruby is flying to Europe to present her latest film at several festivals, and she invites Sara to tag along as her assistant. Sara agrees, but when the film is rejected by critics and audiences after its premiere in England, Ruby goes into an emotional tailspin, and an exasperated Sara abandons her mother, taking the next flight to Paris instead of heading to the next festival stop in Berlin. Sara spends some time in the City of Lights as she ponders what to do with her future, while Ruby is left on her own as she tries to figure how her life and her art went so wrong. I Am A Good Person/I Am A Bad Person received its world premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Two teenagers learn you don't have to be in love to break someone's heart in this drama. Seventeen-year-old Lina (Hallie Switzer) visits her mother's family in Modra, Slovakia every summer, but she finds herself facing the prospect of making the trip by herself when her boyfriend abruptly breaks up with her. At the last minute, Lina invites Leco (Alexander Gammal), a boy in her class, to join her; she thinks he's cute, and he's in the market for a girlfriend, so the two set out for Modra. While Lina's family assume the two are an item, it soon becomes obvious to Lina and Leco that they don't share much beyond a return ticket, but that doesn't keep Leco from feeling hurt and betrayed when Lina steps out with a boy she's just met. Modra was written and directed by Ingrid Veninger, who previously distinguished herself as a producer. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Tween ennui serves as the emotional focal point of co-directors Simon Reynolds and Ingrid Veninger's lyrical study of youthful loneliness. His parents so consumed with running their North Ontario hotel that they have precious little time to share with their son, twelve year old Daniel (Jacob Switzer) spends most of his days attempting to avoid responsibilities that include changing the bedding in the rooms and cleaning up around the grounds. The kids from town are always trying to score booze from Daniel for their parties, but he'd rather pass the time breaking stuff and crashing in the rooms than doing favors for them. One day, while stealthily making his way to the pool, Daniel spies a girl just about his age floating face down. Startled, Daniel begins to talk with the girl and discovers that her name is Vera (Elena Hudgins Lyle). Vera's parents are currently in the midst of a bitter separation, and much like Daniel she's frequently left to her own devices. As Daniel and Vera wander the hotel grounds discussing their lives the things that are truly important to them, they eventually come to realize that the thing that binds them so tightly together is their mutual disappointment of not being closer with their parents. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A young boy draws on the power of magic in order to unite a noble healer and a wounded warrior in Toronto filmmaker Charles Officer's poetic feature directorial debut. Jude (Karen LeBlanc) is a City Hospital nurse afflicted with sickle-cell anemia. Her twelve year old son Ciel (Daniel J. Gordon) longs for her to get well, and begins casing a series of healing spells in hopes that they will ease her suffering. Into Jude and Ciel's life stumbles Silence (Clark Johnson), an underground fighter who has just taken a pummeling. Silence was in need of stitches, and Jude was the nurse on duty at the time he was admitted. An imposing figure who's just as taciturn as his name suggests, Silence is still shaken by the recent death of his trainer - a man who was as much a father figure as he was a coach. Not only has the loss shaken Silence emotionally, but it's also forced him to take on some heavy new responsibilities. Perhaps if Ciel could bring this pair together, Silence could find the emotional support he so desperately needs, Jude could have a companion to keep her company during those dark days of illness, and a young boy will finally have a protector for himself and his ailing mother. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

When an alcoholic extraterrestrial living in a small Northern Ontario town finds God, his spiritual journey leads him on tour with a local bar in the feature debut of director Rob Stefaniuk. Soon after crash-landing in a remote Ontario town, innocent alien Phil strikes up a warm friendship with an open-minded young boy and a remarkably intelligent beaver. A stranger in a strange land, Phil eventually begins to fit in by drinking plenty of hard liquor and jumping in on jam sessions with the local bar band. Beneath the picturesque natural wonder of Niagara Falls, the General (John Kapelos) at the "Top Secret American UFO Base" plots to bring Phil to his base for a series of grisly medical experiments. Informed by his friend the beaver that there is a ship in Niagara Falls which he could use to get back home, the drunken Phil continues to spiral into alcoholism before attacking a cigarette machine and getting sent to prison. Having found Jesus during his stint behind bars, a rehabilitated Phil sets out on tour with the bar band while attempting to dodge the bullets of the General's feared assassin Madame Madame (Nicole deBoer). ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This powerful, politically charged cable TV movie was based on the memoirs of Hungarian gynecologist and Holocaust survivor Gisella Perl. Having spent the WWII years in charge of the woman's infirmary at Auschwitz, Perl (played by Christine Lahti) hopes to leave her living nightmare behind when the Allies liberate Europe. But when she applies for American citizenship in 1946, she is hauled into military court to explain the extent to which she "collaborated" with the Nazis during the war. The U.S. officials are especially disturbed by the number of illegal abortions Perl performed at Auschwitz without her superiors' knowledge. But as Perl struggles to explain to her relentless interrogators (the explanation taking the form of extended flashbacks), she terminated the lives of the unborn to save thousands of pregnant women from the Nazi gas chambers. Filmed on location in Canada, the U.K., and Lithuania, Out of the Ashes made its Showtime network debut on April 13, 2003. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The true story of one of the most contentious labor disputes of the 1970s is the basis for this made-for-cable drama. In 1973, many of the men of Harlan County, Kentucky, were employed by Brookside Mining, who operated a number of coal mines. Brookside paid its employees meager wages for dangerous, backbreaking work, and also controlled housing and retail sales in the area, boarding its workers in shacks without central heating or indoor plumbing, and selling them food and clothing at inflated prices. Warren Jakopovich (Stellan Skarsgard), an organizer for the United Mine Workers Association, encouraged Brookside's workers to join the union and go on strike for fair wages and better working conditions. Many of the miners simply couldn't afford the loss of income that a strike would mean, but when two workers died as a result of Brookside's willful ignorance of safety standards, most of Harlan County's mine workers finally went on strike. A judge formerly employed by Brookside handed down an order forbidding the workers to picket the mine sites, but Ruby Kincaid (Holly Hunter), whose husband Silas (Ted Levine) was fired for protesting dangerous conditions and whose father was attacked by scab laborers, organized the wives of striking miners to picket in their place. The Harlan County War was based on the same strike portrayed in the Academy Award-winning documentary Harlan County, USA. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Produced for Canadian television by Alliance-Atlantis, the weekly half-hour series Drop the Beat (aka In That Mix) zeroed in on Canada's urban music industry, with special attention afforded the hip-hop school. Repeating their roles from the earlier series Straight Up, Merwin Mondesir and Mark Taylor starred as Dennis and Jeff, a pair of college students who ran their own program on a campus radio station. While the series was essentially a drama with comedic undertones, there was time aplenty to feature some of the top hip-hop acts of the era as guest stars. Drop the Beat made its first Canadian TV appearance on October 2, 2000. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Steal This Movie! is a dramatic account of the tumultuous life and times of Abbie Hoffman, one of the most visible and influential figures of America's 1960s counter-culture. (Its title was inspired by Hoffman's irreverent "survival guide," Steal This Book.) Hoffman's founding of the Youth International Party (better known as the "Yippies") and inventive acts of street theater -- including an "exorcism" of the Pentagon and the riotous protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago -- made him a household name and a star of the anti-war movement. They also earned him enemies, and he was eventually arrested for trying to sell cocaine to an undercover cop, a bust that he contended was a set-up meant to discredit him. Rather than face a long prison sentence, Hoffman went underground, leaving behind his wife and children and posing as "Barry Freed," who became a respected environmental activist. In time, Freed acknowledged that he was Hoffman, spent two months in jail, and returned to activism full-time until his 1989 death. Steal This Movie stars Vincent D'Onofrio as Hoffman, Janeane Garofalo as his wife Anita, Kevin Corrigan as Jerry Rubin, Troy Garity as Tom Hayden, and Jeanne Tripplehorn as Joanna Lawrenson, who became romantically involved with Barry Freed. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Made for television, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three is adapted from the suspense novel by John Godey, previously filmed as a theatrical feature in 1974. The earlier version was highlighted by the verbal cat-and-mouse game between a cynical veteran NYPD detective, played by Walter Matthau, and a world-weary master criminal, played by Robert Shaw. The remake offers two detectives, Piscotti (Edward James Olmos and Ray (Lorraine Bracco), who match wits with a man calling himself Mr. Blue (Vincent D'Onofrio), who has masterminded the hijacking of a New York subway car. As his cohorts hold the 14 passengers hostage, Mr. Blue demands a $5 million ransom, to be delivered in one hour, or else the captives will be killed one by one. Though the dark humor which pervaded the 1974 version is largely absent here, the remake pulls off the neat trick of being highly suspenseful and subtle and low-key at the same time. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three debuted February 1, 1998, on CBS. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

For his 1994 nonfiction work Peter Mettler: Picture of Light, documentarian Mettler sought to do something oft attempted but rarely - if ever - achieved: to capture the legendary aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, on film. To accomplish this goal, Mettler and a substantial crew embarked on a 3,000 mile train journey to Churchill, Manitoba -- battling such conditions en route as 40-below temperatures and blinding snowstorms. They also ran into difficulty when devising ways in which to film, not only because of weather that threatened to damage the camera, but thanks to the necessity of shooting at a mere 3 frames per second and expanding time on an optical printer to render the lights visible on celluloid. The body of the film contrasts stunning views of the Northern Lights with varied observations and reminiscences by indigenes about the natural phenomenon - everyone from a priest to a local octogenarian to an astronaut. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
