In Central America, the peasants are nearly all "Indios," or people whose cultural values are those of indigenous people (rather than European or Spanish). Since the landowning and propertied classes abuse them horribly, these same ruling-class types live in perpetual fear of a bloody uprising. As a result, they suppress and abuse the peasants even more. Ironically, for the most part these peaceable people only want to be left alone. Those who do want to foment revolution have virtually no weapons and few allies to help them. In this action/adventure movie, based on a true incident, a group of Guatemalan peasants who have sought refuge in Mexico are sought out by Guatemalan death squads, and those who aren't tortured and killed are taken away in captivity. The hero in the story is a Mexican hunter whose family is mistakenly included in the raid and who teams up with a few of the survivors to win his family back and take revenge. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Also released as Valley of the Swords, this lugubrious US/Spanish co-production features the usual mid-1960s "tax shelter" international cast. Broderick Crawford plays a despotic 10th century Spanish king who, in cahoots with the invading Moors, has banished handsome Castilian nobleman Spartaco Santoni. With the surreptitious aid of Crawford's daughter Teresa Velasquez, Santoni assembles an army to march against the Moors. In keeping with the 13th century epic poem from which this film was derived ("El Poema de Fernan Gonzales") Santoni's path is smoothed by the celestial intervention of patron saints Milan and Santiago. Among the big names picking up a few tax-free dollars in The Castilian are Cesar Romero, Linda Darnell, Alida Valli and Fernando Rey. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The unbeatable combination of both Dolores del Rio and Libertad Lamarque co-starring in this three-hanky melodrama about the self-sacrificing love of a mother makes this otherwise unexceptional film a people's favorite. Lamarque plays the mistress of a married man and del Rio has the role of his wife. After the husband dies in an auto accident, the mistress survives the crash and later gives birth to their son. The grieving widow agrees to adopt the boy as her own -- on the condition that the mistress bow out of the picture completely. She agrees and so it is settled, until many years later when the repenting birth mother wants to get to know her now-grown offspring. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Julio Álemán stars in this fast-paced, often violent tragedy based on a true incident involving three young delinquents. The tale is directed byLuis Alcoriza, well known as a screenwriter for Luis Buñuel in films like Los Olvidados. Everything begins when two youths with nothing constructive on their minds decide to form a gang and go about terrorizing young couples. During one such episode, the female victim becomes attracted to the leader of the gang and so an odd, on-the-edge relationship begins. Now the group of three steal a car in Mexico City and take it joy-riding to Guadalajara where a suspicious used car salesman calls the police after they try to sell him the car. Desperate and with nowhere to turn, the trio have every reason to be frightened because the police have orders to shoot them on sight. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

La Carcel de Cananea is a well-wrought, finely acted Mexican western directed by Gilberto Gazcon and starring the popular Pedro Armendariz as a federal lawman on the trail of a young criminal. The youthful fugitive from justice (Augustin de Anda who died before the film was released) is at first an unknown quantity. But after he is captured by the persistent federal deputy, the two men begin to have a greater appreciation for each other. This friendship of sorts does not help while they both contemplate the prison that waits at the end of their journey. Fortunately for the story, there are no songs or musical numbers to interrupt the narrative. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Alfredo B. Crevenna directs this amusing Mexican comedy-drama, sprinkled with a few risqué situations but not as spicy as the book on which it is based. Popular actor Francisco Rabal plays the wealthy, elite friend of a woman (Terre Velasquez) who is caught in a serious dilemma. Her family has fallen on hard times and she needs to help them, however she can. She decides to marry her monied friend, and once the wedding is behind her, the challenges of moving in the upper echelons of society and somehow making the most of the marriage give rise to humor, and eventual happiness for all concerned. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The celebrated Mexican comic Tin Tan steps outside of his usual slapstick in his portrayal of an eccentric millionaire in this comedy by director Gilberto Martínez-Solares. A singer with several albums to his credit, Tin Tan drops those talents here as well, making this an unusual effort that pays off in the end because of the credibility he achieves as the rich tycoon. The wealthy man comes across a woman in dire straits and nobly decides to help her out, hopefully giving lie to the title of this typical but effective Mexican comedy. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Popular Mexican director Benito Alazraki has put together an effective cinematic version of a drama by Hector Mendoza which involved the participation of the audience. The play was held in a theater-restaurant and the dining ambiance is worked into the storyline. In the film, the setting is a cabaret where a prostitute and a young man fall in love. His intention is to marry her regardless of her past but that simple objective is not necessarily easy to reach. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Although this is just a routine comedy it does play on the daydreams of an unknown quantity of young men -- how does a mild-mannered student turn into a super-macho and win the woman he really wants? In this instance, the weakling is a poor student (Manuel "Loco" Valdez), forced to work as a waiter in order to pay for his college education. When a scientist he knows tries out an experiment on him, the lowly waiter turns into an extraordinary version of manhood, a macho who can do anything he wants both physically and mentally. Now if that does not impress the woman he longs for (Sonia Furio), then nothing will.

Each year for several years running, Cantinflas, one of Mexico's most popular and beloved comics, came out with a new film, and Sube y Baja is his 1959 offering. As in most of these films, Cantinflas plays a set role or roles, such as a doctor or a priest. In this case, he is the model sports "hero." He is a football player and a speedboat racer, also a rich man and a poor one, and in all cases, he keeps to the character he developed long ago -- that of the double-talking, fast-talking, funny-talking slippery man who confounds everyone and keeps Spanish-speaking audiences laughing and coming back for more each year. As in his other films, his intriguing looks and "adorable" attitude attract women with no problem. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
