This gang warfare drama is from director Scott Kalvert, whose previous film was the controversial and violent The Basketball Diaries (1995). In this sci-fi action story set in the not-so-distant future, American and Russian scientific teams have joined forces to man a space station that is still being constructed as it orbits the Earth. After a number of flaws in the station's computer system become evident, Amanda (Teri Ann Linn), a system's expert, is put on a shuttle to the station to troubleshoot the equipment. Joining her is Russian technician Federov (Frank Zagariono), but en route it is discovered that Federov is actually a member of a terrorist group; after taking Amanda hostage, Federov threatens to destroy the space station and use SDI weaponry against the world if his demands are not met. With time running out, maverick shuttle pilot J.J. Hendricks (Daniel Baldwin) may be the only person who can rescue Amanda and save the world from the Russian terrorists. Thus, John must tackle the challenge of rescuing Diana himself, leading to a nail-biting climactic showdown in the desert. For all its melodrama and grimness, this film has as astonishing amount of humor, mostly invested in the "sick" comments made by Drew D'Arcy and his partner in crime. The suspense lies not in who will survive, but how long it will be before the neighbors complain. Frederic Forrest carries a what-am-I-doing-here? expression all during his brief scenes. A virtual remake of Katt Shea Ruben's existentialist vampire opus Dance of the Damned, this direct-to-video item revisits the tale of a brooding bloodsucker (Scott Valentine) who befriends a suicidal stripper (Charlie Spradling), reveals his sanguinary intentions to her, and entices her to enjoy the dark pleasures of immortality. Where Ruben's film rose above exploitation status through believable performances, well-written dialogue, and artful camerawork, this pointless remake chooses instead to wallow in the seamier elements of its subject matter: nudity, copious gore, and the occasional violent action sequence. A welcome exception to the slasher-stalker-kidnapper films usually seen on the USA cable network, After the Shock is a tribute to the courage and heroism of Bay Area residents following the San Francisco earthquake of October 17, 1989. Director Gary A. Sherman opts for a "cinema verite" approach, utilizing a hand-held camera to recreate the style of the original on-the-spot TV reporting. The cast includes Scott Valentine, Rue McClanahan, Yaphet Kotto, Jack Scalia and Richard Anthony Crenna as various firefighters, paramedics, law officials and private citizens. One of the best performances is offered by Nick Zaninovich, a real-life quake survivor who spent seven hours trapped in his car, which was buried under a collapsed stretch of the Nimitz freeway.
