This made-for-TV film served as the pilot for the internationally popular adventure series Baywatch. David Hasselhoff stars as Lt. Mitch Buchanan, the man in charge of the LA County lifeguard squad at Malibu beach. Future series regulars spotlighted herein are Shawn Weatherly as Jill Riley, Parker Stevenson as Craig Pomeroy and Erika Eleniak as Shauni McLain. Not that it should matter to the film's "babewatchers," but there is a plot-a "Fatal Attraction"-style thriller involving a woman scorned. And, as bonus, there's a thriller explosion-at-sea vignette. Baywatch: Panic at Malibu Pier was first telecast April 23, 1989, some six months before the premiere of the series proper. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Another "get even with Hollywood" satire in the tradition of SOB and Movers and Shakers, The Big Picture is an elongated inside joke complete with un-billed celebrity cameos. In this first feature-film directorial effort by actor/writer Christopher Guest, Kevin Bacon plays a "boy wonder" director whose willingness to compromise his ideals allows him to keep afloat in Tinseltown. Bacon's corruption begins when his first Hollywood project, a black-and-white experimental film about an over-40 menage a trois, is distorted beyond recognition into a color, big-budget "youth trip". Bacon hasn't really sold out; he's merely waiting to accrue enough industry clout to strike back at the Philistines in charge. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Kevin Bacon, Emily Longstreth, (more)
In this third entry in the raunchy, sophomoric comedy series, the riotous students of Angel Beach High endeavor to get even with their old nemesis Porky who is trying to force the basketball coach into throwing the championship game. It seems Coach has been on a losing streak at Porky's newest establishment, a riverboat converted into a casino. Plenty of slapstick mayhem ensues when his team rallies to save him and the big game. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Ever since the "Topper" movies made ghosts likeable and helpful, films like The Heavenly Kid have taken up the theme with varying degrees of success. In this version of life after death, Bobby (Lewis Smith) is a teen who dies in a drag race as he goes over a cliff. He then enters a curious "mass transit" system that will not take him "uptown" until he returns back to earth and gains a little more virtue. And so Bobby is assigned the thankless task of converting Lenny (Jason Gedrick) into a self-confident individual who can date women without fear (not exactly on a par with bringing peace to the world, but this is a teen movie). There are some twists and turns along the way, though nothing shakes up the status quo or ventures beyond the already imagined. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Lewis Smith, Jason Gedrick, (more)
