A quickly forgotten chapter in United States military history is relived in this harrowing war drama from director Ridley Scott, based on a series of Philadelphia Inquirer articles and subsequent book by reporter Mark Bowden. On October 3rd, 1993, an elite team of more than 100 Delta Force soldiers and Army Rangers, part of a larger United Nations peacekeeping force, are dropped into civil war-torn Mogadishu, Somalia, in an effort to kidnap two of local crime lord Mohamed Farah Aidid's top lieutenants. Among the team: Staff Sgt. Matt Eversmann (Josh Hartnett), Ranger Lt. Col. Danny McKnight (Tom Sizemore), the resourceful Delta Sgt. First Class Jeff Sanderson (William Fichtner), and Ranger Spec. Grimes (Ewan McGregor), a desk-bound clerk getting his first taste of live combat. When two of the mission's Black Hawk helicopters are shot down by enemy forces, the Americans -- committed to recovering every man, dead or alive -- stay in the area too long and are quickly surrounded. The ensuing firefight is a merciless 15-hour ordeal and the longest ground battle involving American soldiers since the Vietnam War. In the end, 70 soldiers are injured and 18 are dead, along with hundreds of Somalians. Black Hawk Down was voted one of the top ten films of the year by the National Board of Review prior to its limited Oscar-qualifying release. On the basis of his work in this film, co-star Eric Bana, a relatively unknown Australian actor playing Delta Sgt. At a secret military base in the American desert, Dr. Harlan Jessup (Ron Perlman) is charge of the experimental "Operation Sandman", in which volunteer soldiers are injected with a new serum that will allow them to operate without sleep for days at a time. Led by senior NCO "Gunny" Riggins (Richard Tyson), the volunteers are trained in Virtual Reality scenarios pitting them against computer-generated terrorist. Midway through the three-week experiment, Captain Jean Farrell (Mary B. Ward) of Psy-Ops arrives to check out the volunteers and, hopefully, give them a clean bill of health so that funding for Operation Sandman will continue. Unfortunately, a few of the volunteers have been experiencing bizarre and terrifying side effects, which Jessup tries to sweep under the rug. In this offbeat thriller, Ann (Amy Locane) is a young woman trying to put her life back together after she lost her child in a car wreck. Ann agrees, and she soon finds herself becoming quite fond of the little girl. However, before long, Ann discovers Tom has something less than honest up his sleeve -- the child is actually the victim in a kidnapping scheme, and Ann has been made an accomplice against her will. This fascinating historical drama, set in 1862 during the Civil War, chronicles the coming of age of a young Kentucky farm boy. The story begins in Meshack Creek, KY, a tense town where loyalties were sharply divided. Sarah Anders and her son were living there on an isolated farm while her husband was off fighting with the Confederates. They are one day jeopardized by the sudden arrival of Union-Army captain John Hull Abston and his ragged regiment. While they stay, Sarah and the captain begin a begrudging friendship based on mutual respect. Both of them have lost loved ones in the conflict, and the two are emotionally vulnerable. When one of the soldiers is seriously wounded during an accident, the regiment is forced to remain longer on the little farm. Conflict ensues between the captain and his men, when they keep stealing livestock from impoverished enemy farmers. Meanwhile the narrator, then a boy, is forced to use his gun against another human. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

John Goodman is cast as the Sultan of Swat, whose excesses -- especially drinking -- and private demons can (in this context) be excused in view of his genuine love of baseball. The facts never get in the way of a good story for screenwriter John Fusco; we're even offered the umpteenth rehash of "Little Johnny", the largely fanciful tale of the invalid boy who promises to get well if Babe hits him a homer (as in Pride of the Yankees, the cured Johnny makes return a appearance as grownup). The most amusing fabrication is the casting of narrow James Cromwell as the Babe's orphanage mentor Brother Mathias, who in real life weighed 300 pounds. Many of the characters are composites, notably Bruce Boxleitner's Jumpin' Joe Dugan. At least Ruth's two wives--Trini Alvarado as Helen, who suffers Babe's many peccadilloes and dies under strange circumstances, and Kelly McGillis as Claire, who keeps Babe on a very short leash-are depicted with a modicum of accuracy. The baseball sequences are well handled (though there could have been less slo-mo) while Elmer Bernstein's charmingly old-fashioned musical score is right in tune with the film's approach to its subject. The Babe is rated PG; had this been the whole truth and nothing but, and R rating would probably have been in order. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Zalman King wrote and directed this soft-core Harlequinesque Romance that plays like Tennessee Williams meets Fredericks of Hollywood. April Delongpre (Sherilyn Fenn) is the daughter of a powerful senator and heiress to an old and respectable Southern family. April is engaged to marry the granite-handsome Chad Douglas Fairchild (Martin Hewitt) within a few days. But Chad has gone to Tuscaloosa to sign papers for their condo and the rest of the family has headed off to the lake, leaving April in the house alone with nothing to do except take long and languid showers--until she sets her eyes on the pecs of carnival roustabout Perry (Richard Tyson). Soon the two are making tasteful love in every nook and cranny of April's mansion. Unfortunately for the two sexual athletes, April's grandmother (Louise Fletcher) has assigned the local sheriff (Burl Ives) to keep an eye on her. And an eye on her he keeps, so that during the wedding ceremony, he has quite a story to tell. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide
