Cathy Tyson Movies

Having made her feature film debut playing the haughty black call girl Simone in Neil Jordan's haunting Mona Lisa (1986), actress Cathy Tyson has gone on to have a sporadic film career in efforts such as Priest (1994). She is not related to actress Cicely Tyson. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

The central figure in this two-part British miniseries was Julie (Michelle Collins), a nurse who loved weddings. She loved them so much, in fact, that she couldn't wait to have her own. And when it was done, she decided to relive the splendor by having another wedding, and another, and another.... Only trouble was, she never bothered to go through the inconvenience of a divorce. Alternately hilarious and heartrending, Perfect was seen in the U.K. on April 23 and 30, 2001. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A priest is torn between church dogma and his personal beliefs in this British drama. Father Greg (Linus Roache) is a Catholic priest who tends to a parish in Liverpool. Like his superior, Father Matthew (Tom Wilkinson), Father Greg is not dealing well with his vow of celibacy. While Matthew has been discreetly having an affair with his housekeeper, Greg is homosexual, and he occasionally slips out to gay clubs for anonymous encounters with strangers. One night, Father Greg meets a man named Graham (Robert Carlyle) at the bar; when he bumps into him on the street a few days later, he realizes that he's falling in love with him. As Father Greg struggles with his sexual and spiritual identity, he hears a confession from 14-year-old Lisa Unsworth (Christine Tremarco), who tells him that her father has been molesting her. Mr. Unsworth (Robert Pugh) confirms his daughter's allegation during confession, and he tells the priest that he will not stop his incestuous behavior. Should Father Greg violate the seal of the confessional to save Lisa from further abuse? Priest, which opened in America on Good Friday, generated considerable controversy, both with Catholic organizations (who denounced the picture) and the MPAA (the film had to be re-edited to gain an R rating for U.S. release). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Horror maven Wes Craven attempted a slight change of pace from his usual slasher movie milieu with this chiller loosely based on a true story. Bill Pullman stars as Dennis Alan, a Harvard researcher sent to Haiti by a pharmaceutical company to investigate the zombie legend and any possible connection it might have to a rumored drug that could be used as a new breed of powerful anaesthetic. Once on the Caribbean isle, Alan is aided by a good voodoo priest or "houngan" (Paul Winfield) and his daughter (Cathy Tyson), who runs a local clinic. Alan's search also pits him against an evil houngan, Dargent Peytraud (Zakes Mokae). Peytraud also controls the Tonton Macoute (the Haitian secret police), who are involved with soon-to-be-deposed dictator "Baby Doc" Duvalier. The Serpent and the Rainbow was based on the book of the same name by Wade Davis, an ethnobotanist whose real-life hunt for the zombie drug was credited with cracking the medical mystery behind the myth. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

The British Business as Usual stars Glenda Jackson and John Thaw as the husband-and-wife managers of a boutique. When a huge store chain purchases Jackson and Thaw's establishment, chain executive Eamon Boland is sent to check out the place. It seems, however, that he's more interested in checking out pretty boutique employee Cathy Tyson. Jackson slaps a sexual harrassment charge on Boland, who uses this contretemps as an excuse to fire her from her own store. Down but not out, Jackson conducts a determined public campaign to get her job back and to put Boland in his place. Business as Usual makes no bones about its anti-Margaret Thatcher, anti-Big Business political stance. While this aspect of the film might be lost on American viewers, the plight of Glenda Jackson's character is all too familiar. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Bob Hoskins plays George, a tough but basically goodhearted British mob flunky, recently released from prison, where he'd served a term to cover up for his gangster boss (Michael Caine). Still willing to be everyone's doormat, George agrees to act as chauffeur for Simone (Cathy Tyson), a haughty, high-priced call girl. They don't like each other at first, but George begins to fall for her and take a protective interest. She implores him to help her find her only truly friend, a prostitute named Cathy (Kate Hardie). Touched by this devotion, George locates the girl, only to be chagrined to learn that Simone and Cathy are lovers. Hoskins is used and abused by so many people in Mona Lisa that when the worm finally does turn, you feel like cheering--even though it doesn't make him any happier. Director Neil Jordan cowrote this study of underworld mores with David Leland. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
