This Israeli drama is based on the complex novel of love, obsession, and politics by Amos Oz, one of Israel's foremost authors. The protagonist is Ilana a beautiful divorcee. Though she and ex-husband Alex, an internationally recognized scholar, split up seven years ago, she still carries his torch. That she has since remarried and has a daughter, she cannot get Alex out of her heart. He lives in London. They share an adolescent son who keeps running away in search of independence. The divorce was hard on him. Using flashback and narration, Ilana compares and contrasts her two marriages. Life with Alex was passionate; they lived on a beautiful estate. Life with new husband Sommo is tepid at best. For some reason Alex's lawyer and Sommo try to keep Alex and Ilana at odds. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Yoav (Doron Nesher) is a member of an elite diving unit in the Israeli Navy who has just lost a friend (killed in action). It is up to him to visit the widow, and when he does, they develop a bond based on their shared grief. This unspoken affinity between them is on the verge of growing into something beyond simple commiseration when Yoav realizes he must decide where his priorities lie, with his military unit or with his personal life. Like others in his group, their excursions into civilian life so often involve consoling widows or parents or children, made all the worse by knowing that they must go back again and face future tragedies in action. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

How much of director Amos Guttman's own personal experiences are reflected in Drifting is open to conjecture. It is true that the film's central character, played by Jonathan Segelle, is a movie director. Already hampered by his lack of funds, Segelle has difficulty gaining acceptance in the filmmaking community because of his open homosexuality. Segelle's self-image takes a beating when he submits to the sexual overtures of a Palestinian radical. As the first Israeli film with unabashed gay themes, Drifting was the center of a storm of controversy upon its first release. Critics were quick to see, however, that the film was not designed as exploitation or titillation, and as a result championed Drifting, enabling the film to secure strong Middle-Eastern play dates. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
