For those unfamiliar with Asterix, a popular character in European cartoons and comic books, he is a courageous but humorous-looking warrior of the Gauls in Roman times, and often single-handedly fights off the encroachments of the Romans. In this feature-length cartoon, the Romans have conquered everything except the village where Asterix lives. This has survived because the town druid has a special potion which confers incredible strength. However, at the time of the film, the druid has been knocked on the head and has lost his memory, which is inconvenient, to say the least. Asterix and his villagers must search far and wide for something which can help them either with the druid's memory, or with reconstructing his potion. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

They combine forces to search for the hidden loot in a rambling French mansion and fend off a school of slimy, money-hungry lawyers. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Asterix, the popular French cartoon character, comes back to the big screen in this second feature-length animated film by Pino Van Lamsweerde. Helped (and occasionally hindered) by his muscular sidekick Obelix and his faithful pooch Idefix ("fixed idea"), Asterix must go to Britain to come to the rescue of his cousin. The Roman legions are about to run roughshod over his cousin's village and must be stopped. Saddled with the task of getting a huge barrel through the city of Londinium, Asterix meets with unexpected circumstances. The end result is a new brew made of tea leaves and a whole new custom. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The second of a long string of animated children's films based on cartoon characters created by Rene Goscinny and Alberto Uderzo, this is an entertaining adventure featuring the intrepid Asterix. The hero is accompanied by his mutt Idefix (Francophones will love that one - "fixed idea" characterizes a stubborn mutt indeed) and pal Obelix, a little lacking in the attic but full of heart. Their mission is to rescue two friends captured into slavery by the nasty Romans -- a galling thought. The trio head to North Africa where they join the Foreign Legion, apparently of a much longer history than otherwise known, and then head to Rome for a climactic confrontation with some hungry lions. For the moms and dads in the audience there are generous send-ups of biblical sagas such as Ben Hur. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In spite of spending three hours developing the story of French peasant Charles Saganne (Gérard Depardieu), the sweep of this epic skims over the qualities that transformed Saganne from an ordinary officer to a great military leader. Saganne was first sent to a garrison town in North Africa before Colonel Dubreuilh (Philippe Noiret) assigned him to other missions, finally giving him a chance to exercise his innate ability to lead men. After a tragic hiatus in Paris where he fails to promote the colonialist cause, he returns to the Sahara and outshines his past accomplishments, leading a ragtag band of Arab dissidents in some brilliant military maneuvers -- for which he won the French Legion of Honor. His newfound recognition also attracted a society maven who became his wife, and after his tour of duty has ended Saganne moves with her to the village where he was born. But the year is 1914 and Saganne's peaceful village idyll was not meant to endure -- he is again called off to war, and to his destiny. Even though the costuming, landscape, battles, and charisma of Depardieu as Saganne and Noiret as Colonel Dubreuilh are outstanding, and several subsidiary characters deliver emotionally compelling vignettes, the protagonists as an ensemble have not been scripted with much depth of character -- making the three-hour epic seem a bit too long in the end. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Lucky Luke, the cowboy, his faithful horse Jolly Jumper, and his dog Rantanplan, are all out fighting their perennial enemies, the Dalton brothers, in this cooperative animated adventure from Hanna-Barbera and Morris Gascinny. To accommodate American audiences, Hanna-Barbera removed Luky Luke's ever-present cigarette, and eliminated some of his "ethnic" pals to avoid any potential problems in the minority department. For many Luke fans, these alterations were tantamount to destroying a character they have known since 1945, and so the feature was bound to receive mixed reviews by those for and against the changes. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this wartime comedy, Gregoire (Jean Lefebvre), an irrepressible tale-spouting French postman, is unable to convince his fellow villagers that he blew up a nearby bridge, thus slowing a German troop movement. Perhaps he actually did it. When a military "accident" leads the Germans into the village seeking the culprit and reprisals, the postman volunteers that he is the guilty party, but even now he is not believed -- even by the Germans. At long last, the Americans arrive, and they are willing to let him look good in front of his countrymen; they make it look as though he captured a whole group of Germans single-handedly. At last, he has his day of glory. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In truth, there are two French Detectives in this European crime melodrama. Lino Ventura plays an aging, been-around gumshoe, while Patrick Dewaere is his young, callow and cynical associate. An eccentric family in need of money turns their crumbling chateau into a hotel in order to renovate the old place. Repairs are made to the aging structure, but they only have one guest and too many empty rooms. The young granddaughter, with the help of her mechanic boyfriend, manages to make sure all the cars that stop at his garage are in need of overnight repairs. The hotel business soon improves as tourists are stranded and forced to seek lodging at the chateau. Cesar (Yves Montand) leads a trio of bank robbers to the hotel. Posing as aristocratic nobles, the crooks hide out in the splendor of the old house, charming the ladies and winning at poker games to pass the time. The mother of the family offers herself as a lure to draw more guests, who often take advantage of her adulterous yearnings. The hotel business does very well as the family saves their ancestral home after a dubious start in this romantic comedy. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

This comedy concerns an inventor (Robert Dhery) of a boat who is fired by his violent, irascible boss when the project is completed. The boat, christened Le Petit Baigneur, is wanted by the Boss (Louis De Funes), who pulls out all the stops to possess the coveted craft. Author-actor-director Dhery wrote this story especially for the comedic styling of De Funes, one of Frances most popular comedians at the time of the feature's release. His "slow burn" is reminiscent of American actor James Finlayson, who perfected the technique in the silent-film era and continued his success in countless films, usually being tormented by the antics of Laurel and Hardy. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

- Louis de Funès, Robert Dhéry, (more)
