Italian director Fausto Brizzi's romantic comedy Ex draws from an ensemble framework and an all-star European cast, including Claudio Bisio, Nancy Brilli, Cristiana Capotondi and Cecile Castel, to meditate on the various situations engendered by the presence of former lovers - from the instances in which affection and devotion have regressed into hatred, to the cases where friendship blossoms from a prior romance, to the instances where love lingers on indefinitely. From instance to instance and one onscreen relationship to another, the film meditates on the myriad of ways in which old romantic partners can shape our lives. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Giancarlo De Cataldo's best-selling tale about three lifelong friends effectively take control of organized crime in modern-day Rome comes to the screen in this sweeping crime drama from director Michele Placido. Libanese (Pierfrancesco Favino) is the cold-hearted leader of a juvenile delinquent trio that also includes undyingly loyal Freddo (Kim Rossi Stuart) and power-hungry Dandi (Claudio Santamaria). After kidnapping and casually murdering a baron (Franco Interlenghi), the scheming friends soon form the shady alliances with the local gangsters, corrupt cops, and secret service members that will allow them the opportunity to effectively corner the market on heroin sales. Meanwhile, determined Inspector Sciloja (Stefano Accorsi), who has made it his goal to bring Libanese and his cronies to justice, stealthily manages to trace back the marked ransom money from the baron's kidnapping to Dandi's girlfriend Patrizia (Anna Mouglalis) - an alluring call girl whom the inspector soon finds himself falling for. But Inspector Sciloja isn't the only one to fall under the spell of a female who seems strangely out of his reach. On the other side of the law, Freddo becomes enamored by the decidedly pure Roberta (Jasmine Trinca), whose attempts to educate the smitten thug in the beauty of the Italian Masters seem to be made in vain. In projecting a fictionalized tale of murderous criminality against the larger backdrop of Italy's turbulent social history during the waning decades of the 20th Century, director Placido strives to craft a film that is not only entertaining, but historically relevant as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The English title of this complex Italian film is apt. Featuring 65 main characters and 130 speaking parts (famous faces abound and many of the actors appeared gratis), and ranging in tone from tartly humorous to darkly tragic, it presents 30 interwoven slices from the lives of modern day Romans during a single day. The lone, silent figure of a lone jogger provides a sort of continuity between the vignettes. Beginning at sunset of the previous day, the jogger is seen warming up on his apartment terrace, looking for all the world as if he would like to jump. The rest of the stories seem to be randomly presented. Stories include the robbery of a Chinese restaurant that causes a birthday celebrant to die of fright, two different newlyweds who find themselves attracted to each other, an opportunistic mechanic's plan to capitalize on the death of a rival, a sneaky, sadistic meter maid and others. One uniting feature of the stories is their underlying bitter assessment of modern humanity. People are seen as selfish and basically cruel, still the stories move quickly and the balance between humor and drama, affection and cynicism, and shallowness and complexity is carefully maintained. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

While Alex could have any woman, he really pines for the elusive Eleonora, a woman who keeps him at bay while she tries to decide whether or not to remain with her older lover. Max has a brief respite from his inner demons when he falls for Anna, a singer on the romantic rebound from a devastating relationship. Meanwhile Alex' father causes a stir when he gets involved with a much younger woman. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Although the drug cocaine is present in this film, the Crack this movie is about is, metaphorically, the crack in society which all the protagonists inhabit in a rundown neighborhood in Rome. Rodolfo has the best chance of any of them to work his way out of the degradation which seems normal here, as he is a student and a rising light in the boxing world. His life takes a downturn when he is told by his supposed girlfriend that "It's the boxing or me. Decide." In fact, he is the only serious rival for Michele, a coke-sniffing former professional boxer who wants to make a comeback, and Rodolfo's supposed girlfriend is actually Michele's lady-love. He put her up to making the ultimatum so as to give his career a better chance. Rodolfo's brother, meanwhile, hears a conversation between the two which gives the whole story away, and, enraged, he rapes the girl in the changing room at the gym. When Rodolfo comes looking for her and finds this happening, the die is cast for a violent conclusion to the film. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this violent movie, the old adage that "those who can't do, teach" is turned on its head to become "those who can't do, simply commit mayhem whenever and wherever they can." The story follows a group of soccer "superfans" (called ultràs in Italy) whose mission in life is to get into fights with the "superfans" of other teams. That really is about all they have in their lives, as they don't have decent jobs or a place in society. They are directionless criminals with bad attitudes living on the fringes of society. In the story, Prince has just returned from a stint in prison. He and his old pal Red are in conflict with one another -- not because he has stolen Prince's old girlfriend, but because he wants to settle down and get a regular job. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
