Clint Eastwood put his tough-guy image on hold for this personal project, which follows a musician taking one final chance at the big time. Red Stovall (Eastwood) is a would-be country singer who has been bouncing around the margins of the music business for years. With nowhere in particular to go, Red arrives at the failing Oklahoma farm of his sister for an extended visit, where her son Whit (Kyle Eastwood) quickly bonds with his uncle. However, it's obvious that Red is in very poor health, drinking heavily and breathing with difficulty, and when Red is invited to audition for the Grand Old Opry in Nashville, Whit tags along for the road trip to keep an eye on his ailing uncle. En route, Red and Whit are joined by Whit's grandfather (John McIntire) and another hopeful vocalist, Marlene (Alexa Kenin), who like Red is chasing her own dreams of stardom on the Opry. Clint Eastwood performed his own vocals and guitar work for Honkytonk Man, and a number of Nashville legends appear in cameo roles, including Marty Robbins, Porter Wagoner, Ray Price, Merle Travis, and Johnny Gimble. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Dead Kids, aka Strange Behavior, is a creepy exercise from director Michael Laughlin--who conceived this as part one of an abortive "Strange Trilogy" which also included 1983's Strange Invaders. Although lensed in New Zealand, the film is set in a sleepy American town, in which a series of gory murders committed by local teenagers are linked to a twisted brainwashing scheme by a deranged behavioral psychologist (note irony please). Despite some humorous details (e.g. one killer dons a Tor Johnson mask) and a nostalgia for '50s pulp horrors (not to mention a fondness for splattery death scenes), the disparate plot elements don't come together as well as they should, failing to live up to the premise's potential for guilty chuckles or gasps of horror. Fiona Lewis is sexually menacing as the mad doc's assistant, but Louise Fletcher's wasted role may make viewers pine for Nurse Ratched. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

A young man finds out that making friends with the Big Men On Campus is more difficult and dangerous than he ever imagined in this offbeat blend of drama and comedy. Craig Lewis (Jeff East) is a recent high school graduate who has won a track scholarship to a prestigious university. Craig's impressive time on the track attracts the attention of Rod (Brad David), the leader of the most exclusive fraternity on campus, and Craig and his new friend Barney (Charles Martin Smith) are invited to pledge the Delts. However, before Craig and Barney can join, they're put through a hazing ritual in which they're left in the middle of nowhere wearing just athletic supporters and told to find their way back to town. Barney has a serious accident making his way back to the house, and Craig is shocked to discover he's dead. When Rod and his muscle-bound lieutenant Phil (Jim Boelsen) discover Barney's body, they hide his remains in a freezer and tell Craig if he wants to keep himself and his friends out of jail, he'll have to impersonate Barney on campus for the time being. Also starring David Hayward, Kelly Moran and Sandra Vacey, The Curious Case of the Campus Corpse was originally released under the title The Hazing. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
